Our prayers go out to our Prowler Families in Missouri, Oklahoma and the tornado ravaged areas. If I counted correctly, we have 27 owners in the registry from Missouri, one of those from Joplin, and 21 in Oklahoma. We here hope that everyone is well, and that those effected will be taken care of soon.

Just as I posted that, a Tornado touched down in Dallas Texas, and now Jasper County, Joplin, Missouri is under another tornado warning. Can it get any worse for those folks.

Mid-day yesterday, I was glued in live on KFOR, Channel 4, Oklahoma City, with their outstanding coverage via radar, helicopter, and storm chasers on the ground.

If you want to experience the destruction and visual effects of several powerful tornadoes, click on this link below and go FULL SCREEN:

http://www.kfor.com/videobeta/a7a8897c-2173-4832-ae5e-dfdaf3ddbac8/New s/Tuesday-NewsChannel-4-10-00-p-m-

Between the 5 minute mark of the video, through the 11 minute mark, you will see what the chasers captured on live video during the violent storms.

Ken and I were watching one of the cells with a "possible" tornado on the ground about a mile and a half from the house. Sirens were going off, sky was the brightest green and the clouds were swirling everywhere. Luckily it looked like it kept to the pasture lands. Ken's work had two trucks with their windshields blown out by softball size hail and the trucks look like someone took a baseball bat to them. Some scary stuff last night. Lots of wind damage.

Cousin Tami,,,,even a mile and a half is too close for comfort. Do Ken and you have a basement or a storm cellar?

Yesterday, I heard mention of Kevlar 'Safe Room',,,,do you know anything about them?

Did they finish the baseball game in Arlington last night? I heard hail was hitting the ball park during the game....

AC: We have talked several times about putting a saferoom in our garage. I think we will probably do a shelter in the backyard instead. Ken really likes the kevlar room though and yes it was very close and spooky to watch. We reinforced the closet under the stairs going up to the second story as a storm "closet" for now. Yes, they finally finished the game this morning at 1:30 a.m. after a 3 1/2 hour delay. I think they evacuated the stands 2 to 3 times and brought people through the dugouts and under the complex. DFW Airport is running way behind today because they had to pull so many planes with hail damage until they can check out the fusilage. T

T,,,,Thanks for the info and the game update.

I think Ken has a good idea with the Kevlar room,,,,or even a storm cellar under the garage. (Make it large enough to drive the fast, silver cat down into )

Because of the Dallas weather last night,,,it had Phx Sky Harbor airport all backed up last night, with flights ready to take off for D/FW, and then called back to the terminal and passengers unloaded.

They are still bringing planes back in this morning and said they would be doing that until at least 11. They de-planed everyone when the storms were coming through and no other flights went out or came in after around 8:30 or 9 last night. The planes that were waiting on the tarmac were brought back to terminals. Everyone was sleeping on cots within the terminals. I think American had the most amount of damaged aircraft. Love Field was supposedly not as backed up. When we built the house we actually talked about putting a storm shelter under the garage, but because of the engineered slab we decided it was going to be too big of a hassle - wish we would have now.

This is the first I've heard of a kevlar room. I'm not so sure they would do any good. They may protect from flying debris piercing into the room, but the room has to remain standing first. There's not alot standing in Joplin.
Stairs and bathrooms (due to all the piping) are usually a stronger, more supportive place to go. They are usually on interior areas of the house and/or often without windows. Often times they tell you to get in the tub with a mattress over you. I have a half bath under my stairs where I would go but one should remember that the suction coming under the door could suck the mirror off the wall causing at least flying glass, so a suggestion for taking cover in a bathroom is to be sure to remove the mirror. Not a common thought and not something you have time to do.
Generally speaking, Texas does not have basements due to the sandy soil here. I know of a couple that had bomb shelters built in their backyard (underground). Something like that wouldn't effect the house structure and should be a better idea for a safe place to go.

Mickey - I think the room that AC is talking about is one that was developed by Dupont in partnership with Texas Tech in their testing for tornado proof rooms/houses/shelters. They came up with a "safe room" that reinforced by steel plate and kevlar. The roof is steel plate and kevlar as well. You can retrofit them to your existing structure by using a special anchor they have developed that anchors it to your existing concrete slab that is supposed to withstand (I think) up to 200 MPH winds. Ken and I have been looking at these for a couple of years and since we don't have a work bench in the garage because we have the "barn" where Ken keeps all of his tools, etc. we would have plenty of room to include it in the garage and Ken would actually prefer that so the kids would not have to run out into the weather to take shelter. There have been several times when I have seen video footage of entire buildings demolished and the "safe rooms" are still totally intact.

Here's the info: http://www2.dupont.com/Kevlar/en_US/products/stormroom_kevlar.html

I just read recently that under the stairs is not a good place because the wood can fall down "in steps". Not a pun. They also said the middle of the house is the worst part since the roof can cave in and therefore you have a better shot in a corner.
We rarely have tornadoes. We do have heavy duty wind storms, of course but nothing like out in the plains.
We have had way too much rain, about 150 % of normal so far.
They are suffering downriver now from all of our rain.

Thanks Tami for the info.

Ed, tonight on the news they again stated to go to an interior room without windows if you have a tornado headed toward you. I guess its like those coffee tests... its good for you... no its not... oops, i guess it is...

We finally got a good soaking rain tonight. Sorta... I went out to get the mail and noticed we didn't get the rains that were headed our way. When I came back in I heard a sound so looked out the window and it was pouring down pretty good. It just missed me. Was putting on a good lightning show and making the lights blink. So I ran around the house and closed windows. About the time I got them all closed and sat down, it had stopped. It came down good but didn't last but maybe 15 minutes if that. We'll take what we can get I guess. Our yards are totally parched. I noticed how green the grasses were on the TV reports of Joplin and Oklahoma.
Tom was under the gun tonight with severe thunderstorm warnings with quarter size hail and 60mph winds. I hope we hear tomorrow everything survived at his place.

We were under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning most of the night here, but the storm passed to the south of me. It was a pretty impressive light show. I wish I would have got some of the rain though.

We were hit hard last night. Recorded 90mph straight line winds, lightning, heavy rains. I now know what PDS means on the weather channel..PRETTY DAMN SCARY! Our house is OK but trees are down on all over. We did without power for 5 hours. No complaints compared to others. We have another day of PDS (Particular Dangerous Situation).

Bruce - glad you all were ok. We have really had some weird weather this year. They counted 9 tornadoes went through around Dallas and Sherman the other night. I'm just thankful no one was killed.

I didn't realize we had one touch down just a few miles north of us. It took off a second floor and flipped a car but only hit one house. A bowling alley lost its roof but nothing like they have been having out west.
Lots of trees uprooted in N. KY.
