Bob, Pay the ticket. Law says if your pulling a trailer, you have to stay in the right lane. I confirmed this with the CHP at Cruisin For A Cure last year. While they didn't say out right you couldn't have a trailer in the car pool lane proper, they said you have to be in the right hand lane when pulling a trailer except when passing. They did say that a commercial vehicle was alright in the car pool lanes as long as they met the occupancy requirements.

I must like aggravation. I know you must stay in the right lane, however the car pool lane in a seperate lane for 2 or more people. If they don't say you can't be there, how can they convict you for something that is not posted or in the law... I know it's small point, and i don't care about the fine, I don't want it on my record. They can have 3 times the fine to get the wall built. Insurance in my only concern. thanks

The Speed Limit in the state is 55mph while pulling a trailer 4 years ago I got a ticket for pulling 64mph cost $271.00, if your in the car pool lane and driving 55mph your holding up traffic if your going with the flow your doing 70+mph which will get you a ticket anyway and at that speed and that much over the speed limit while pulling that really is a go to jail and no free card sounds like you got your get out of jail card and used it the guy gave you a break Bob. My ticket did not effect my insurance.

Try traffic school, it would keep ticket knowledge away from insurance companies. Also, check out online traffic schools, I've done them in the past, not having to show up for an 8 hour class was a tolerable experience. Good luck, haven't needed one in 5 yrs. (knocking on wood)

Thanks Curtis for your words of wisdom. I was hoping to hear from a prowler person with real knowledge on this subject. I own 10 cars and take TICKETS and Insurance very seriously, which is why this is only my second ticket in 37 years. I was just looking for some help in what I consider a serious matter. I was not looking to be the next Rodney King. Thanks everyone for your help and many happy times in your Prowler. bob

Hey Bob,

Call the courts and verify if this type of ticket is a MOVING VIOLATION. If it is not a MOVING VIOLATION, then it WILL NOT affect your insurance.

Good Luck,

ADACUS

If you want, my best freind is a Los Angelas County Shrerrif I could call him and verify.

Just let me know.

plead not guilty and see what happens....maybe the cop won't show up or the judge will dismiss it because you were in the seperate HOV lane.

I always postpone the first court date because that is when the officer is scheduled to appear. When the second court date comes up chances are the officer will not be scheduled that day and you can plead not guilty.

Bob, without further adding to your "aggravation", the driver is responsible for knowing the laws. Because it is not posted is really no excuse. We have all heard the phrase at one time or another "ignorance of the law is no excuse".

As I stated in my response above, as given to me by the CHP officers, and confirmed today with my neighbor (a sherriff) any vehicle towing a trailer is confined to the right hand lane. There is also a violation for being in a lane other than the right hand lane if you are not moving with the flow of traffic.

I believe this is the reason the CHP gave me as to why you cannot be there. Their position was you have no way to legally get in the car pool lane, because you are required to stay in the right hand lanes.

Thanks everyone for your input. I recieived my anwser from a private e-mail. I was wrong for being in the lane. I had driven in the car pool lane with the trailer often and never was bothered before. So now that everyone knows. Stay out of the car pool lane or left lane when pulling your trailer !!I hope this will help other prowler owners who did not know this. ( and ,yes, several I talked to on the phone did not and have done the same thing )I will do the traffic school if I can. Thanks... Bob

Hello Bob,

I called my sheriff friend in Los Angeles County Sheriffs department.

He told me he believes it would be classified as a moving violation (bummer), but to contact the CHP as they would be the proper authority to advise that information.

In response to RED5 & MDProwler, the subject of the officer that issued the ticket not showing up in court. That does not work in Harris County (Houston), TX. When you go to court it's one of the first things the judge states "Any party hoping to get their ticket dismissed because the officer does not show, it will not work!" Well, that sucks.

I'm sure if you plead not guilty trial by jury then he/she would have to be there, but man that drags it out.

i.e., be careful with that direction, you may find yourself with limited options once your sitting in the court room. In Harris County, if you have a non moving violation i.e. expired registration, expired inspection, burned indicator light, defective head lamp....get it fixed, get a receipt, go to court, show receipt, case dropped, pay court cost, have a nice day. oops, am I showing my experience here.

I think registrations and inspection stickers should be issued in 10 year intervals. Man, annual in a pain in the A*%. I am a business owner and it just pi##es me off every time that time of year comes. Now, I have every vehicle I own all hitting the same month for inspection, registration, and insurance renewal. I dedicate 1 full day to getting every thing done. Who has 3 or 4 days a year to dedicate to that. PLEASE.

Okay, so the final thought is the BAD COP!!!!!!!!!!
A simple WARNING CITATION would have had the same effect. Especially after you ran his MVR and seen he has had NO, NADA, NICHE infractions. Man, where is the justice!!! Not to mention, he had the PRIVILEGE of pulling over one the FINEST vehicle / trailer combinations since Honda introduce the GOLDWIND / TRAILER COMBO.

I mean damn, admire the car, issue the warning, and escort him out of the lane.
IT'S A PROWLER DUDE!!!!!!!!
THE SPEED ISN'T GOING TO HOLD UP TRAFFIC.
THE MERE APPEARANCE DOES THAT ALONE.

GO KAT!!!!!!!!!!!

In the end, if you can go for the defensive driving to get the ticket droped. Go with that option. Go to a comedy defensive driving class (You'll have a good time.) Get the certificate, mail it in, bam....your done. oops, one other thing.........mail a copy to your insurance company.....HOLY DEFENSIVE DRIVING BAT MAN, AN INSTANT 10% REDUCTION IN YOUR VEHICLE INSURANCE.

GOOD LUCK

Next time you want to show off the RIGHT SIDE of your KAT, Do it in a parking lot

You're insurance company may ask you if you took the class to dismiss a ticket. Don't call your insurance company... just send in the certificate. MAKE A COPY FOR YOURSELF! If they should call you, just tell them no, you took it for the discount. They won't know any different.

Oh, and thanks for the Harris County warning.... I go next Monday. Wish me luck! Its a doozie.

Drew is absolutely correct! You have been told that you were wrong in pulling your trailer in the car pool lane...you've accepted that.

Now get enrolled in a Traffic School approved by the State of California. I would contact my local police department for further details.

I went this route about 15 years ago when I was living in Newhall,CA. You will not only...NOT have to pay this ticket but it will wipe this moving violation off your insurance record.

Good luck!!!

Brian
