Well...it started out looking to be a great run in the mountains with several of the Colo. Prowler club. Just outside of Conifer the power steering quit and I knew I had lost the primary accessory belt. Called on the GP radio and the group pulled over. Sure enough...the ribbed belt scattered. Jack and I made a DESPERATE attempt to get back to Denver (about 35 down hill miles). NO FREAKING luck!! The volts steadily dropped, temps seemed OK, then all of a sudden the POS drops into second gear limp mode. Got about another mile or so, lost all the gauges, it jerked, studdered and QUIT. What a bummer of a day! [img] Charged the battery back up after the tow truck dropped it off. It still is locked in second limp mode gear. Hope there is no long term damage done to the tranny..the fluid looked good and smelled OK? I not going to say I'm going to bannish the car just yet, 'cause I'm just way to pissed to think reasonably. |

Sorry to hear about your car Chromer........hopefully, it will be back up an running soon. I've heard that the supercharged cars are more prone to having that happen; supposedly due to some alignment issues??? |

Chromer - sorry to hear about your problems on the run. I hope Jack will foregive you for making him ride in that tow truck! |

Chromer, Sorry to hear about your problems. Don't disconnect the battery to clear the codes. Get the car to the dealer in the morning and have them read the codes to decide the best course of action. ------------------ |

RADCAT had a similar problem on today's parade cruise. I'm sure he'll post all about it. Overheating, spitting and sputtering, bouncing tach, then a busted new belt. |

quote: Mike- Thanks for the note...but..too late..I disconnected the batterey before I got your note (oops!). I had the car on the charger (disconnected cables) for 12 hours last night and gave the battery a full drink of volts. This morning, I hooked up the battery cables, jumped in the car and went around the block....and...WHALA!! no longer locked in second gear and have full fucntion of the tranny in auto and auto stick! Chromer, My belt is starting to make a lot of noise. In Canada they thought I had a blower on it. It doesn't seem to be as loud since we got back. I have 42,000 on it. I am going to take out the original spark plugs tomorrow so now it will no longer be EXACTLY Factory stock, but still really close! |

Ed: Your concession to peer pressure is shocking. I have been a member here for more than 2 years now, and if one thing has remained constant, it's been your pledge to remain "mod-free". This is a dark day, my POA friends. The end of the world is at hand. (lol) Kevin ------------------ |

It all makes sense to me. Modern cars are so dependent on power for the computer, a non-functioning alternator from and blown belt would cripple a modern car in minutes. I had a 72 Camaro with a blown alternator. I drove it 45 minutes to my friends shop no problem. I had my alternator go on my 91 Z28: I didn't make it 2 blocks before the battery died from the drain! So much computer stuff dependent on the alternator. Everything your Prowler did after your busted belt makes perfect sense, and I'm not surprised at all that disconnecting the battery would reset all back to normal. I think you can drive with some assurance of no problems with your new belt in place. |

I thought my driver's side windshield wiper was shot, on the way to Canada. I was really depressed knowing I was going to have to replace a part, but with some duct tape, it looks like new. lol. |
