I had my front shocks replaced today. They are silver and say "Koni" on the top. Front end looks to be sitting a tad higher. Are these the correct factory replacement shocks for the front of these cars when the 2001's leaked fluid all over ? Have not driven it yet, will do that this evening. Should I have the backs replaced as well to match the front ? Thanks - Hope all is well with everyone..... John, Don't worry about the rears unless they're leaking. You have the correct replacements but you also have new springs. They replace the whole assembly. I doubt you will notice any difference but give them a week or two to settle and you should be at the same ride height. Long time no chat buddy! |

Hey Larry, Thanks for the quick response...... yeah, I have just been busier than heck. Still check out the board fairly regularly. Got about 5600 miles on the Kat now - still lovin it. Business going well ? Love the stuff I have purchased from you (trailer lock reinforcement, hitch locks, Stands - best invention ever - I should take pictures of my garage so you can see without your invention, my tailor would be outside, and of course the hinge protectors.....) Hope all is well with you. Take care - hope we get to cross paths here again in the near future..... Regards, John |

Stray Cat....Koni's were the original equipment shock until Chrysler decided to install an "improved ride" shock from a different vendor for the 2001 model year (could have also been some 2000's but I'm not sure) I had Koni's installed on my 2001 Black Tie in March under warranty due to front shock leakage also. I was PLEASED to hear that DC went back to Koni's as the warranty replacement after so many "leakers" from the other vendor. I am VERY pleased with the shocks. No height differences and although it is claimed that 2001's had an "improved ride" shock...my wife and I were both amazed at the immediate difference we felt in the ride just blocks after leaving the dealer. I had a BRAND NEW 99 Prowler for a short while (before wife #1 found a new lover and left and it had to go as part of the divorce settlement) with Koni's and when I got my 2001 with only 2000 miles on it, I commented that it did not ride as well as the 99. Some other owners may think I'm crazy, but that is "JMO". It could be possible that my original front shocks were so bad that it had been that way for over a year after I purchased it, but I did not notice the leakage until a month or 2 before I took them in for replacement. And since I work in the automotive industry in vehicle testing...I highly doubt they were so bad I would not have noticed. So I am curious after you drive a few miles if you notice a considerable difference in the ride. I now have 1,000 miles since the shock replacement and we still mention on occasion how much better the ride is since the Koni's were installed. Now don't get me wrong...I'm not saying it rides like a 300M, but it certainly is greatly improved over the set they took out...once again "JMO" |

Larry...yeah I had a 99 that was bought brand new in January 1999....I only got to drive it 1,000 miles...by September of 99 she was out the door after 27 years for a guy 13 years younger she met on the internet. I never said anything to you about it cause it's a part of my life I have tucked away...car had to go to settle credit card bills she racked up just before leaving...in fact Eric Lee (Latham Motors) bought the car from me. Since Prowlers were still scarce and sales really hot I actually almost broke even on the deal...just loosing basically the taxes and plate costs. It was an early 99 and didn't even have the chrome wheels. Well as you can now see how happy I am in my new life...things really turned out for the best!!!!! Greatest wife I could have ever hoped for...and you know the rest of the story...Black Tie for my birthday...what you don;t know is that Julie knew all about the 99 Prowler and how I had to sell it...and what it meant to me...and look at how it all turned out!!! How could I be so lucky!!! And if it was you that dated the ex for awhile...man I feel sorry for you.....HA HA But good thing you got out in time!!!! I know you are only joking....ARE YOU ??? so there...I spilled my guts in front of you and the rest of the POA group...how is it that Paul Harvey says it..."now you know the rest of the story" |

Wow, Just reading through this trail of messages makes me feel good about having the Koni's put on...... Prowlrman, what a story ! Glad you shared it with us. Drove the car today. It is dirty so it drives terrible . I did however notice that it seems to corner better. Ride seems a bit stiffer, but then I've lost 8 lbs so it could be the weight difference...... Thanks for all the help. I let you know when I drive it more.... John, The Montgomery parade is 9 AM on MONDAY, the 5th. Let me know if you can make it. We are meeting on Cooper west of Montgomery Rd, toward Blue Ash. I think maybe in the Jr. Hi parking lot. |

John, last month took my 2001 "Orange" in also with leaky shocks and they were replace with , Koni. I agree with you, ride a little stiffer and smoother. It could also be that the other shocks lost so much fluid that we were riding on springs only, halp with the new shocks greatly. Maybe it is onlu "Orange Kats" that leak. |

What are some of the characteristics of leaking shocks? I have a 2001 and it’s always been kind of a hard ride, but it never really bothered me . What should I be looking for? Thanks. |

quote: I guess on my car the ride deteriorated slowing as the shocks leaked. What tipped me off wasn't the ride, but I became concerned about a spot on my garage floor. Once I determined it was in front of the engine and under the nose I put the car on a set of ramps and saw evidence of leaking on the frame. The dealer replaced then under MaxCare extended warranty. |
