A Live Axle is one that supports a portion of the weight of a vehicle as well as providing driving power to the wheels connected to it. Live axles are far superior off-road compared to IFS. Live axles have much more travel than IFS, and are easier to build in more travel over stock. In situations where IFS would lift a tire, a live axle will easily keep both tires on the ground. Plus, you get the benefit of the solid axle lifting and creating more ground clearance. Also, when one wheel of a live axle is up, the opposite wheel actually has added traction with the axle acting as a lever. Many rock-crawlers remove IFS from their rigs and install a live axle. Maybe a little easier put is a Go Kart rear axle which is driven by a sprocket with a "solid axle" which both wheels are driven at the same time. |
