I bought my '97 as new last October and was told by the dealer that it was the 49th Prowler built as per the VIN number. This meant little to me at the time, but became of interest to me as I learned more about the subject on this very informative site. I learned that the first 61 Prowlers were Pilot Builds. This means that mine was among those builds, and that it should have been scrupulously inspected by many eyes for quality and correctness of build. Further discussions on this subject let me know that the VIN number is not an accurate reflection of the build sequence, and that some early Prowlers actually had a paper tag on the left side cowl area identifying the actual build number for the car (info provided by "Wildcat"). This information finally got the better of me and I had to go pull the cover off the car to find out for sure. Let it be known that there is such a tag, as stated, and that in my case it identifies the car as VEH# PR-000143. Oh well, I guess it's not a Pilot Build car after all, but I still love it. I highly doubt any pilot cars are sold to the public. Too much liability. |

The white paper tag on the left side cowl is the tub number and corresponds to the metal tag on the right cowl behind the hood side panel which also has the part number of the tub assembly. |

Todd, I've always thought that Pilot Build cars are the first few (50-100) units to roll off the assembly line that will be sold to customers. The only difference is that the production sequence is very closely monitored to make sure the assembly process is under control. Mike, is the tub number the same as the build sequence number? |
