Hi, I have a couple of questions for all of you prowler owners out there. I’m 22 and have always been in love with the Prowler and now that I’m working full-time it is finally within my reach BUT if I do get the Prowler it will be my only car. I live in New Jersey and work in Staten Island, NY. This means that I will be driving it everyday even in rain and possibly snow. Where I live maybe we'll get and inch or two of snow but usually nothing more than that. My current job pays 52k/year after taxes I’m looking at around 36K so owning and insuring two cars is not really an option. Insurance on a Prowler for me will be about $3,000/year. My current car is a rear wheel drive convertible so I'm used to how these cars drive in bad weather and the fact that they do sometimes leak... My questions are: 1. How reliable are these cars? I drive about 80 miles a day round trip for work and need my car to be running. I don’t want to worry that at 50,000 miles the car starts to fall apart. 2. I want one in Black which I believe was last made in 2000. Have there been any major changes in the 01’ 02’ models that I should be aware of? 3. How well do they handle driving on bumpy roads? Will hitting potholes cause more damage to a Prowler than your average car? 4. I heard that there is a Prowler Show/Auction in Atlantic City, NJ sometime in February? Adam, while the Prowler can certainly stand up to daily use... the weather there will certainly ruin the under carriage in a rather extreme fashion. The resultant loss of value of your car will more then pay for a 2nd inclement weather car. As for potholes and such... hitting a bump at speed can certainly cause the loss of a very expensive rim or two. Been there and done that and seen others do it also. Not to mention, there went your 4 way alignment, which just cost you a 1/2 day and $100 to fix. I do drive my 3 almost daily, and know many others who take theirs to work and back. There is a used 2000 black for sale for only $30,000 right now in the classifieds. It's a good deal, and then you can afford a new cheapie car for $15K. The 2000's ride a little roughly then the 2001's and 02's and they have a different torque converter which makes them slower then the later models. This converter I understand can be replaced with the newer version for only $350 ish plus labor. Go for your dream, you only live once! ------------------ |

Adam - you will no doubt get several different opinions. Most owners do NOT use these cars as daily drivers. Being one that does, I average about 120 miles a day (when I am in town) and have put 48,000 miles on my kat since May 2001. Mine is Black 2000 just like you are wanting. No major changes in 2001 or 2002. My observations and suggestions are as follows: The car is just as reliable as the Chrysler Sebring Convertibles I drove prior to the Prowler on a daily basis. The Sebrings had a back seat, more daily driver friendly storage space, and front wheel drive that was better in the snow and on wet roads. About the only things that have cost more to operate the KAT are the cost of tires and how often I need to find a self spray car wash (It is against the law to drive a dirty Prowler, trust me on this one If you can live with the smaller, almost non existent trunk space; don't need a back seat, and know that the car handles like other rear wheel cars like Vettes, Mustangs, Pick Up trucks, etc. in bad weather, you will have a blast driving the car everyday. One last thought. I LOVE my black kat, but black is a tough color to keep clean on a daily basis. Now - I can't imagine not driving a kat daily. Marty ------------------  Driving my Dream |

These cars, while nice, have their faults. IMO, this is not a daily driver nor your primary vehicle. If you can afford two cars, got for it. if not, get something more practical. |

I do not drive mine every day. Heck I hardly ever drive it anymore. I would have to agree on the area you live and the miles you will drive it isn't the car for you. In the winter do you get much Ice & Snow? If you answer yes you need something different. I guess if you would drive a Mustang or Camaro the Prowler would be OK too, but it wouldn't be the car for me and my 1st car was a `67 Barracuda and my senior year in high school was a `69 440 RoadRunner. Yes I was able to drive in snow and ice, I like winter weather, but I didn't have to as far as you. If you could afford the 30K plus the insurance and a beater type car (grandmas 4 door, cheap & safe) I would say get it, if not I would suggest a front wheel drive car, or move south to get out of the WINTER WEATHER. ------------------

Adam, the other thing is wait until late Spring and buy one and drive it every day all Summer and Fall and make your decision based upon your own experience. You asked a tough question based upon where you live, etc. Everyone does not have the same preferences for creature comfort. Idon't think I could stand to abuse my Prowler on a regular basis and not keep it clean but that is just me. Do what YOU think is best based upon the advice you get. I would advise getting a RED one for instance. lol. |

I got my 99 yellow kat in march of 2002. i also have a 2000 toyota celica gts which I was my first new car. I got that in 2000 when they first came out. I drive my car every day to and from work. 40 miles round trip. I make 1100 in car payments each month and 220 a month for insurance. plus rent and other stuff. Once in a while its tuff to save up money for stuff. but if you have your head on straight you should not have a problem. Its all worth it. On a side note I was watch MTV's Cribs and they had Ted Nugget on there. They were showing which cars he has. And guess who has a Silver Prowler. Yup yup yup. I just thought to myself. A rock star has the same car I have. Pretty cool! Also I was at the store today and I heard some little kid say " I have a toy car just like that daddy". I just laughed.

I was in the same predicament as you earlier this year. I was 22 (23 now) and just got a great paying job, I knew it was time to buy a Prowler. I decided to keep the car I had in college, so I could use it as a daily driver. I agree with a few of the others... get a cheap front wheel drive car that you can drive on the rainy/snowy days. Whether you decide to buy another cheaper car or not, make sure you buy the kat... you won't be disappointed! |

I'm 25 and purchased a 2001 Mulholland Prowler with 29 miles on it in July and while fun to drive, it's had a lot of problems for a brand new car. The car leaks BADLY when it rains and it's actually gotten worse since I took it to the dealer. No sound comes out of the right speakers when listening to CD's, and the front display of the dash has the most annoying rattle. I've had it to the dealer 4 times for these issues and they've been unsuccessfully fixing any of them. I filed for the lemon law and a rep from Chrysler is coming down to supervise the dealerships work on their last attempt next month. I've had way too many problems for a 40 thousand dollar car. |
