Has anyone installed a CB in the Kat? If so how did you hook up an antenna? Interested in this for teh Colorado road trip... ------------------ |

Fred, I use a hand held 40 channel while doing long trips. I mounted the antenna base on my ball mount for the trailer hitch by welding a tab off to the side. This has worked very well and I can easily remove the ball mount with antenna if needed. The coax cable barely shows and it can be tucked out of sight when not used. I routed my coax through the same hole that the trailer wiring goes though in the trunk floor. Using a 12' coax, I then went under the trunk carpet past my TCB and down the right side of the passenger seat, under the passenger floorboard and then out from under the carpet on the top right side of the driveline tunnel under the console. The end of the coax fits nicely in the passenger side map pocket when not in use but I usually just place my radio under the front edge of my seat when I'm not using it. I almost always leave my ball mount and antenna on the car as I have my coon tail hanging on the antenna. My hitch, ball mount and drawbar are all powdercoated black and I use a black plastic ball cover when the trailer is not connected to keep everything neat and clean. |

I use a hand held 40 channel CB also. I just use the small antenna on the unit. I store it in the accessory storage pocket between the seats. Seems to work fine for me. ------------------ |

... what's a CB? lol ... you mean everyone doesn't use a cell phone with a nation-wide provider these days and has a bucket of minutes to 'blow' chatting with one another during a road trip? Sorry ... couldn't resist. Have a friend that fabricated a bracket to mount under rear bumper using existing hardware, ran cable up and into trunk and then to passenger compartment. Sleek, just NOT for me. |

Larry, thanks for the input. I appreciate the detail also. I hadn't thought of a hand held at all. I'm curious as to why you also use the external antenna, is that just for range? I'll take a look at some for sure.. ------------------ |

Rent the movie Joy Ride and you will never use CB's again. Good movie but a bit creepy I use handhelds too. ------------------ |

A fixed antenna gives you alot more range. I have both hand held and a small Cobra that I have placed behind the passenger seat. an adapter can be purchased to hook external antenna to hand held. Since I had both.. I prefered the mounted unit. I too mounted like Larry Lord and ran wire close to the same way...got tips from him too.....I used an aluminum bracket to mount to mirror on semi....drilled and tapped 2 holes in the bottom of the ball reciever to mount the bracket on. Painted 3' ugly stick Prowler Yellow. I have seen on someone else's Cat were they mounted to the hitch tube. This way the reciever could be removed and antenna could stay on the car. It just has to be back far enough to clear the deck lid when it is opened. It is good in large group to have at least 2 vehicles with CB's. Leader & Cleanup man. When traveling with 15 + cars you will get spead out further than the small radios will work. This way the everyone can stay in contact. My 2 cents ------------------

Fred, The external antenna is for range. I tried the small one on the handheld and it was very poor. I could hear but I just couldn't get out. I then went to a windshield mount and it was much better but still only fair. On my way back from the 1999 Power Tour it came loose from the windshield and I actually caught it bare handed while driving with the top down at just a little over 100 miles per hour. I decided on a 5/8 wave ugly stick style and have been much happier ever since taking the time to do it right. As Larry Mayes mentioned, be sure to mount far enough back from the decklid for clearance when opening. If you are always towing your trailer when using the radio, you might be able to mount on the drawbar of the trailer but the field and the ground situation would probably not be the best.
