Those of you that have mud flaps know that if you don't trim the front flaps, then they will often scrape on speed bumps as you drive over them.

It takes a little experimentation to get the timing right... but if you stop about 1 foot prior to the speed bump, and then gun it just enough, so that you get the front wheels over fairly quickly, then there will be reduced pressure against the tire as it travels down the speed bump, allowing more clearance for the mud flap (and no scraping!! - if you do it right). It is best to approach the speed bump straight on, so that both tires are on the speed bump at the same time.

Of course, you don't want to just blow right over the speed bump... The idea is to minimize the stress on the suspension and other structural parts, but I'm able to go over the speed bump relatively smooth using the technique that I described.

(After all is said and done, I still may end up trimming my mud flaps).

I have noticed that if I hit the bump with my right tire first, I will scrape but if I hit with my left tire first, at a good angle, I will not scrape.

I have found that if I stop about 1 foot before the bump and then cut the wheels full right or left and go slow it clears fine.. Just another way I guess.

I'll give that a try... I have tried cutting the wheels sharp, but maybe not that far. I live in a private subdivision with beacoup speed bumps - whichever way you turn. If I find a better way to drive over them, I'll post it. Of course, there are many different shapes and sizes of speedbumps. The ones here I would call "typical" width and height.

Hey VCD. I'd get up in the middle of the night with a bucket of black top and make little ramps down from the speed bumps so you can get over easier.

MadMax takes those speed bumps at 75mph. Says getting that initial launch and lift with front tire, removes the chance of the mudflap getting caught on the bump surface. I haven't yet tried his method, nor advocate his reckless and fearless tactics
