I tinted the windows of my Kat a week ago (20% tint shade) I know it's not legal but so be it, everybody else with tint gets pretty much the same thing because the legal tint (35%) is not really too much at all. Today was the first day that I went out with it and it took all of 45 min. to get stopped by a cop. I was going through a little town near me and a cop stopped be and gave me a whole ration of $hi!. When he was all done I told him very politely that my Kat isn't tagged in NJ but in FL and I am not a resident of NJ but that I am a resident of FL with a business apt. in NJ. He started telling me that it didn't matter and that if the car in in NJ it has to be legal in NJ. I almost lost my cool at that point. How full of crap can one person be. It was clear that he was pissed that somebody half his age had this car because the first thing that he asked was "Is this your car." I told him yes and he asked "Are you sure it's not your parents." I know I'm not that old but I'm not that young either. After making me wait almost 20 min. while he ran my tags, he came back and told me that he was going to let me go with a "Verbal Warring" this time but that next he wouldn't be so "nice" and to get the tint off my windows if I'm going to be in NJ for any length of time. What a joke. I just smiled, said thanks and told him to have a nice day. I guess I will be seeing him around. The tint stays because it just looks GREAT. Voodoo |

Well its nice that he had so much to do. You know that while everyone is praising the heroic efforts of those in New York, your still reminded that a lots of cops have earned their nick names well. Keep the tint, carry cash and next time ask him if he can write you two tickets because you don't carry that small of bills! Peace brother! ------------------ |

Chrome, excellent advice. I would just add that you might want to keep an attorney's phone number on your speed dial. You may need it. ------------------ |

My windows are tinted "Limo" sides and rear and the front windshield is tinted 35% never had a problem with the cops so far.....The car is a tad difficult to see out of at night but the brighter headlight bulbs cured that problem.......I have been stopped several times and never once did they mention the tinted glass........ ------------------ |

just a note under title 39 of the NJ motor vehicle laws, you must comply with your home state not the state you are traveling through. I was a cop for 17 years sometimes you have a bad day but I worked in a very urban town we didn't have time for motor vehicle stuff. which pd was it Madison, Florham Park,E. Hanover I know most of the guys and I could try to ease the pain next time ------------------ |

ron nj, It was Chatham that I was going through at the time I got stopped. I'm sure the guy was just having a bad day, we all do, but what he was saying just didn't make any since to me. Thanks for siting the law. I will have to remember that. Voodoo |

quote: Same thing happened with the above Mustang, only I was not as lucky. OFFICER: Is this your car? OFFICER: Are you sure this is your car? OFFICER: Are you sure this isn't your mother's car? OFFICER: Well, then this is going to cost you!!! Yep it was going to cost me, almost $245. But, I went to traffic court, told the judge about what happened and what the officer said, and again, the ticket was dismissed. |

Bill, I'll bet the first cop gave other officers the word to be watching for you and pull you over. Probably even gave them your tag number. I have a friend who is a local county cop and even he calls this type of cop a traffic nazi. ------------------ This message has been edited by BeWare on 01-14-2002 at 04:40 PM |
