Here's the way I see it... DC builds a low amount of Prowlers and Vipers and calls them "Special" cars.. That means we, as owners of these special cars, are Special.. So why doesn't DC treat those special owners with special information that the standard car owners don't get? i.e. Inside information as to what is coming down the road for those "Special" cars. After all we're not interested in what they are doing with the Dodge 1 ton dually or the Chrysler T&C minivan... To show off a "Special" Prowler that has some "changes" to the engine and then not say anything at all is not very "Special" to me... My thoughts are that it should have been left at home under wraps.. That is if I'm reading the messages correctly.. ------------------ |

I'm with you Fred, DC should stop "dangling the carrot". The only other explaination is that they're not sure of which way they're going and are lookin for feedback as they want to be sure their efforts are rewarded. What if they made it faster and it still didn't sell? Hey, Gary might be interested in the new 1 ton dually! ------------------ |

take a look at the following web site. http://www.car-truck.com/chryed/buzz/b081001.htm and I quote: BUZZ WATCH EXCLUSIVE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One of my Ace Buzz Patrollers in Auburn Hills reports that the brass at Chrysler has given the green light for a feasibility study on doing a production version of the 2001 Chrysler Crossfire Concept. As previously reported the Crossfire was originally intended as a preview of the next generation Sebring coupe. The study will determine if it will fill that role or if it could be built as an additional model for the Chrysler line. The coolest thing about the concept is its power train, which features a supercharged version of Chrysler's 2.7 liter V6 putting out 275hp and 270 lb. ft of torque. In the concept it's matted to a five-speed manual transmission. Best of all the Crossfire is rear wheel drive. We won't know for a while if these features will get the green light. The only safe bet is that the concepts split windshield will not." ------------------ |

Al, That's got to be a misprint. It can't possibly be a 2.7 litre. They must mean a 3.5 liter beefed up to 3.7 litres. Either that or they don't know what they are talking about at all! ------------------ |

Here's the info from a 8-19-2001 DC press release on the Crossfire: Chrysler Crossfire Concept to Become Reality Pebble Beach, Calif., Aug 19, 2001 - Continuing its industry-leading track record of taking breakthrough vehicle concepts to reality, the Chrysler Group today announced its intention to build a production version of the Chrysler Crossfire concept car. Voted one of show-goers' favorite concept cars on this year's auto show circuit, the Chrysler Crossfire -- which combines American spirit and power with international flair and proportions -- was unveiled at the 2001 North American International Auto Show, in Detroit this past January. "You could just see the pure emotion in show-goers' reaction to the Chrysler Crossfire," said Wolfgang Bernhard, Chief Operating Officer of the Chrysler Group. "Their eyes lit up with enthusiasm. They didn't 'ask' if we were going to build it; they practically 'demanded' that we build it. We believe this will be another home run for us, and we will make sure the production version of the Chrysler Crossfire captures the emotion and character of the concept car." The production version of the Crossfire concept will give the Chrysler brand another exciting and aspirational vehicle -- joining the Chrysler PT Cruiser, 300M, Town & Country and Prowler -- and reinforce the brand's expressive and innovative appeal. As an image car, Crossfire represents Chrysler Group's flexibility and speed in decision-making. It also proves that the company's product pipeline is full, with more unexpected and aspirational vehicles to come. "The Chrysler Group leads the industry in breakthrough vehicle design," said Jim Schroer, Executive Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing. "The Chrysler Crossfire sets the tone for the sports coupe of the future -- much in the same way the Chrysler PT Cruiser redefined compact cars. It's a unique car that you fall in love with, a car that you aspire to own and are proud to drive. We recognize the importance of continuing to lead and being progressive. Crossfire is yet another example in Chrysler's long history of being nimble and turning concepts into reality." The production version of the Chrysler Crossfire will stay true to its American heritage, while adding global appeal. Said Bernhard: "In only six months, we solved all the technical and feasibility issues, completed a business plan, and funded this product program." The company will announce more news about the Chrysler Crossfire at the 2002 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show next January. ------------------ |

I don't know if any of you have ever worked in the corporate environment of an auto manufacturer, but none of them are any different than DaimlerChrysler and their stand on revealing future product plans. 1. Why would you reveal your future product plans to the public? It would be impossible to stay ahead of the competition in terms of product development and innovation. It is all about being the first to show new, innovative and exciting car designs, colors, accessories, and product features. If you talk about or reveal ideas of what you are going to work on producing, someone is going to beat you to it! 2. Another possible reason auto manufacturers do not reveal future product plans would be that they want you to buy current product. The idea is to sell what is currently being built, not to have the consumer sitting around waiting for something else they think is coming out. 3. Plans and ideas for products can change often. Example: Prowler was supposed to end in 2001. That changed. Colors can change weekly. Options can change. It wouldn't make sense to state what plans they have for their products, knowing full well that it could change several times before the product is actually produced. People would be pissed off if they were counting on something particular and it didn't end up that way. Just some thoughts to help you understand the nature of the car business. ------------------ Classic/Beautiful - I'm referring to the Cat of course! |

CJ's point number two, Would you buy a 2002 Prowler if you knew or thought that the 2003 was going to be much improved in the power dept.? I doubt it. Sales are already soft, they would be pathetic when you combine the ugly gold color and the promise of a new improved car just around the corner. It sounds like someone might have been driving the car with the new power train at Woodward. |

I didn't understand this post at 1st either, Tell us what you REALLY think Chris. Don't beat around the bush. I don't see it much different than most companies. CJ is right, sell what you are building and beat the competition to the punch. If everything was out in the open then someone else might come out with something just like it before the person doing the time in R&D Chris if you are unhappy with the cat then sell it and buy a new Vette or whatever makes you happy and see if they will tell you what their plan is for the next model year. I do not look at myself as being SPECIAL, I concider myself LUCKY to own a Prowler. I wanted the chrome wheels & grill but the Factory didn't offer them, But I still have them. I just had to do it myself. ------------------ |

In my experience the computer industry is pretty much the same. You never publicize your plans because the competitive landscape changes so fast you always have to change your plans to keep up. The only think you can talk about with any certainty is what you've already done. There is a classic business model called the Osborne Effect that also comes into play. It is a case study that demonstrates that telling your customers how great next years model will be, will cause them to ignore this years model. The Osborne computer company went out of business because of this effect. To DC we are mushrooms, keep us in the dark and feed us @#$%^.That's business. ------------------ |

Corporate America will never keep the consumer in the loop. It is self-defeating to tell us that there is something better around the corner, regardless of the product. This is by no meams limited to D/C. ------------------ |

Remember Woodward. If you were at the Woodward event and joined us at Harold Sullivan's Collection, you will recollect that the legendary Silver Bullet was powered by parts filtered out the back door of Chrysler Engineering. This car was "King of the Street". The vast majority of those parts never saw the light of day. The legendary HIGH-END Club was comprised of GM, Ford and Chrysler engineers, all playing with their latest "toys". If you were on Woodward and were paying attention to rather non-descript current model vehicles with Manufacturer tags, you would have seen a fair number of these present-day "toys". I noted seven very exciting vehicles running in traffic while on Woodward during the course of the week. Most everyone was paying attention to the classic vehicles and missed these "gems"! Virtually none of them will ever see production. I'd be willing to bet that the vehicle which is being speculated about will never be produced. |

In the automotive industry that's how it works--Design, Production, Marketing and the Bottom Line, all by committee. Unless you have unusual dedication and skill and build it from parts yourself, your car was built by the company. Each year they give us what they think will be popular, but usually it is not the classic machine with the spirit that lives on. However, you can bet that car mag editors and others will be talking about the Prowler long after other cars are forgotten. The various fads will come and go, but the spirit of the Deuce Roadster hotrod as embodied by the couragous guys at Plymouth will always be the essence of what a car should be . ------------------ |
