I was just out at carlisle and had a great time and met a few guys from the list. Had a lot of fun and even won in the show but too bad some of the people out there werent even trying. But anyway, i got to put the prowler up on the dyno trailer that they had there and i ONLY got 174.1HP and 209LB/FT. I have installed the mopar exhaust and a K&N drop in air filter. Now i can see that the torque has went up significantly by comparison to the Paxton stock dyno sheets but my HP has not gone up at all. Wonder what happened there.....

Now the big question, do any of you guys who race or like to go fast ever notice that in third gear around 4200 rpm the car seems to stumble a little and HP and Torque drop off but then come back on again. The car will do this in either automatic or auto stick. Any one know what this might be or what might be causing this .I thought maybe the lockup torque converter but i didnt think it would do it under full acceleration. But it was kewl to be doing 135MPH in 3RD gear at 6500RPM.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hey now, I can tell you what I have noticed. When I bought the car, it had 8k on it. It never stumbled........after I wiped out the stored info on the prowlers computer, the last time on the dyno, with stock gears, I hit a flat spot in third around 3500 rpms for like a good 3 seconds then it came out of it. I didn't notice it on the track the next night but have felt it on the road. I think its the computer trying to learn again. Just a thought............

Jason,

Dan and I were both talking about this a while back. I have seen it only on the dyno.

I experianced the same thing and determined that the tranny wants to go or goes into lockup mode at around 4500 rpms. The tranny stops building torque when it goes into lockup mode.

I believe the TCM input and output sensors report a quick rise in rpms to the PCM than normal since its riding on a dyno drum. So while the TCM sits there trying to figure if something has gone wrong, the TCM sends some interrupts telling the PCM to regulate output power. The PCM and TCM resync and determine everything is okay and then the TCM then reapplies the clutch pressure at full lockup causing that sudden surge in torque.

If you notice at around 4500 rpms my Cat just sat there doing nothing and then picked up.

My technical observation ...

This is the thing though, i tried it just riding on the road and i was doing about 90 when it hit that 4200 rpm flat spot. I mean in a quarter mile i am hitting 90 and with this flat spot i can see that this would definetly kill 1/4 mile times. Do they reprogram these computers for the trannies yet? Maybe thats what i need but i dont know for sure. And its funny how it wont do it in any other gear but third. First and second are fine. Any other thoughts? Thanks for some of the prior knowledge.

With the throttle wide open there is no issue with lock up. Lock up Only occurs when cruising at a constant speed.

When I was doing a dyno pull there was a unhappy area with my car so I adjusted the advancer to make the motor happy every where.

Hey Gene,

The results went along like this:

1st - ME
2nd - Tony M..something....sorry
3rd - Rich Tilden

I definetly felt i had a run for my money with you there Gene. Yours was actually cleaner than mine was but i guess that recall about the color of your car is catching up with you. Im surprised that you didnt place. And after you i would have thought Niteman would have placed b/c his was very nice also. I think rich placed just b/c when everyone found out he had a paxton on it they said cool.

I will hopefully get my pics developed this week and i will send ONE off...lol. Too bad you werent there to see me on the dyno. It was pretty awesome and sooo many people were taping and checking it out. I love attention and that is why i love my prowler. I had a great time and cant wait to meet more people at Woodward.

I'll just have to try harder! All B.S. aside, I had a great time there. It was quite a bit diferent than the Spring Event, only two others showed - Bob and Carol (Silver), Bill and Lucy (Purple). Hope to come to "other" events on the East Coast..or East of the Mississippi.

I spoke with a reliable source today and found out that Dan's explanation is a pretty accurate description of why the stumble occurs on the dyno. I understand that the Dynojet is slightly more prone to this than the Mustang Dyno.

Well after the dyno i have had the kat up to the unhappy spot a few times now. And it still does it. Ill give it a couple more days...do you think that if i disconnect the battery to erase the computers memory it would straighten itself out? My only concern is i like to go to the track and i notice that i am hitting this dead spot b4 the end of the quarter mile and that could be why my times have slowed.
Hmmmm....guess...ill just have to figure somehting out...

fortknox82,

You will never be able to bring up your speed and temperature as quickly as you would on the dyno. The temperature, rpm variables are changing so drastically on a dyno that things must be triggering the PCM/TCM into some sort of diagnostic mode.

You will never experiance this problem on the street. Too many other variable must occur inorder for you to trip your computer into thinking there is something wrong lets figure this out mode.

I suspect being a computer coder kind of guy that their development was coded to work under load. There are minimum and maximum thresholds that have been defined. If the maximum thresholds get violated, the following subroutines must be executed. If these subroutines figure everything is okay, branch back to the main body of code and continue.

Case in point, just park and rev your engine up to 5000 or 6000 rpms without a load and you will see that your PCM begins to use its rev limiter to keep it from destroying itself.

fortknox82,

I really don't believe this is a problem but a feature built into the PCM/TCM program for protection reasons.
