I am not (yet) very knowledgeable re. engines. I am particularly confused about engine size (volume)versus horsepower... the tradeoffs, stroke lengths etc.. Particularly, I am considering buying a 66-72 Jag XKE during the next two years. The later models have V-12s with a little less hp but more volume than the earlier models. What does that accomplish (or not.. the later models are a little slower even with the bigger engine).
Can anyone suggest a couple of good books for a beginner to start to learn about these thing?

Thanks in advance
Carl

Carl, I bought a 67 XKE coupe new in 67. You might want to research reliability before jumping into this car. Everything that held fluids leaked and the electrics gave Lucas the nickname "prince of darkness". The earlier cars might have been faster because of the power to weight ratio.
Mine would top out at about 135. The DOHC 6 was ok but nothing like it's D Jag heritage which was also a 6 but in a higher state of tune. I think mine was feed by 2 sidedraft strombergs, while the earliest were feed by 3 webers or SU's. General info on bore and stroke is big bore, shorter stroke means the HP is made at a higher RPM.. Long stroke, smaller bore means a high torque motor. Hope this helps-AL
