I currently own a '00 convertible corvette and am thinking about upgrading(?) to a Prowler. I have had the vette for about a year and love it, but I always like to have new toys. I don't mine trading the horsepower for something that looks so much more unique. And like I have heard others say, vettes are a dime a dozen around here. Anyway, the only way I could swing it is if I could walk in to a dealer and do a straight trade. Blue Book says my car is worth about $44k. Any chance of getting a new Prowler for that price? Are they still going for more than MSRP? (The vette was when I bought it). Also, anybody know of a good dealer in Houston to work with? Thanks for any info. -Pete P.S. Is there a Prowler wave? ------------------ '01 Nissan Xterra SE 4x4 |

I have had nine C5 vettes, coupes and convertables. Your car, if fully loaded with low miles, is worth about $38,000.00. whole sale and $42K retail...You can get $4500.00 off new convertables now and the new model year, with more horse power is coming out this summer.I bought a new convertable five months ago and got $4,500.00 off...FIND A BUYER FOR YOUR VETTE AND RUN THE DEAL THRU THE DEALER FOR SALES TAX SAVINGS. ------------------ |

Hi Pete- Shouldn't be a problem to do a straight up trade. The Prowler market is as soft as it has ever been. I think this is to your advantage. The Orange or Blue(Mulholland) you can but now in between 42K-45K just about any dealer that had one, UNLESS you get one of those dealers that's looking to rape someone on price. There are several Prowler owners there in the Houston area that can & will help you. I'm sure they will pipe up pretty quickly on this thread. Good Luck and I know you will love the looks you get driving a Prowler! ------------------ |

This was a good question. My best friend has a corvette and wish he had a prowler, the only thing that is stoping him is that I have one. Sorry to say Prowler all the way Viper for the speed. JMO ------------------ |

Pete, I have owned a 1999 Pewter C5 and currently a 1999 Red Prowler. I owned the Corvette for 8 months and have owned the Prowler for a year and a half. My opinion of the Corvette was that it was nice but boring. Especially since there are so many on the road now. I bought mine when there were very few of them. But the turning point was when two other people right on my street in my neighborhood bought Pewter C5s. I had considered a Prowler at the time I bought my Corvette and decided not to because of the reviews I read of the Prowler (no storage, rough riding, hard to see out ot, etc.). So when I went out looking to replace the Corvette, I passed a Prowler on the way and knew then that was what I wanted. The two cars are pretty different, but that's why I like the Prowler more. The Corvette had to be flat-bedded out of my driveway to the dealer a month after buying it because of the column lock problem. Then a month later, the dual AC went out on the driver's side, which is hell here in Florida in the summer. Then later, the clear top started cracking right down the middle. So within the eight months of owning the car, it was in the shop 3 times, more than any other car I had owned. In the year and a half of owning the Prowler, it has been to the dealer once, but it was for the low tire light being on, which was on before I bought it. As far as looks, its subjective. I got bored of looking at the C5 5 months after owning it. I tried putting on the 2000-2001 rims, painting them to match the car, and that only helped for another month or so. After a year and a half of daily driving the Prowler, I am still in awe over its looks. Its like no other car on the road. The Corvette was easy to drive, but became boring. The heads up display was nice, but the electronics in the car irritated me (the dual AC wouldn't cooperate and the seats wouldn't stay where I wanted them). The Prowler is a blast to drive. I get in and drive, and not have to worry about the seat moving or the column locking up. Another thing to note: In the Corvette, I got VIP parking once, after I asked. Now with the Prowler, I get VIP parking 90% of the time (where applicable). They are two different cars. I could go on praising the Prowler, but I do not want this to become a half hour infomercial on the Prowler and a Corvette bashing session. If you have any other questions, I would be happy to answer them for you. ------------------ This message has been edited by William Gallagher on 06-21-2001 at 08:24 AM |

I have a y2k vette and a 2001 KAt. Totally Different. With the Kat you get smiles and grins when your in the vette is race race! The vette is more powerful(I have lots of mods over 400rwhp dyno tested), but the vette also has short commings. The KAt is just a awesome car, its a piece of art its fun to drive, its a little stiff on bumps, and a lot tighter to fit into than the vette. It lask some of the modern day bs that is in the vette(I have hud in the vette, and all the other crap), but for pure fun, Kat wins hands down. |

I own one of each..C5 Pewter Convertible and a 2001 Mulholland..love the Prowler, love the C5 but 2 different driving experiences. Corvettes are very common, but still have that mystique..The looks a Prowler gets is amazing.. It's certainly more fun to drive. Neither is my daily driver, however I can leave the Corvette at the airport parking lot and not worry..something I'd never even think about with the Kat. If I had to pick one and only one for a play car, the Prowler wins hands down. ------------------ |

Prices aren't just down on Prowlers, they are down on all cars. Don't expect top dollar for a used vette and low for a new Prowler. Yes, you can find great deals on prowlers but, you will make up for that in what is offered for your car. Blue Book doesn't really count right now. I trade my cars alot and right now, the one that I was thinking of trading is worth $6-8K LESS then wholesale blue book cause that is what the market will bear right now. I also looked at trading my 6 mos old 2001 Boxster S (500 miles) in on a new 2001 Carrera cabrio (loaded). Guess what, it's worth $10K less and this is trading it back to the same dealer for a 2nd deal in less then 6 months. I saw a 2001 yellow vette convertible (in Houston) for sale that had only 9K miles on it. It was cherry. Asking price at the dealer was only $41.5K if that gives you some idea. New Z06's are fairly rare (especially in yellow). I found a dealer that would take $4K off the sticker for a quick sale. Locally, in Houston, most new vette coupes are $4K off the sticker and I've seen convertibles for $6-7K off the sticker. Your best bet would be to sell it yourself but, don't expect a ton of money for it with all the deals out there right now. Not what you want to hear (I really don't like hearing it myself) ------------------ Mods: 2001 Speed Yellow Porsche Cabriolet |

Well, after thinking about at and playing w/ some numbers, I could probably get by paying about 5-6k out of pocket. That might get me a bit closer to my goal. Now I just need to find an orange kat in the area I can go look at. -Pete ------------------ '01 Nissan Xterra SE 4x4 |

If you want my advise, shop the internet for new cars too. I typically get great deals from dealers outside of the Houston area. I just saved $10K by buying a new Harley out of state (more then offsets any shipping costs) When Prowlers were at a premium, I saved about $15K buying a new Black-Tie out of state. You should have no problem finding alot of oranges out there. ------------------ Mods: 2001 Speed Yellow Porsche Cabriolet |
