I have been wanting to purchse a new grill for my car for a while but just couldn't justify spending $600+ for one. So I have now begun my new project: Building my own grill. What's nice is that it will cost under $100 total (including paint) , will be extremely light-weight, and leads me right into building one of my own personal designs that I have created digitally. Below is a photoshop-editted image of the one that I am currently making, based on the TGF design, which to me, is the nicest. The difference is that I am making it thinner to give a more aggressive and pronounced look.

I have been wanting to do this for a while but it wasn't until last weekend that my girlfriend gave me the idea to make it the same way that they make surfboards: styrofoam coated with resin. So below is the first pic showing the framework made of styrofoam. This is in really rough form now, but will take shape once the resin has been applied and shaped.

Once this is done, I have created a couple of my own grill designs that I will work on making a reality. For now I just wanted to post showing that it is possible to create your own custom parts cheaply, if you are creative and patient. Cost to make this grill is going to be about $30 for materials (styrofoam, resin and stainless steel mesh), plus about $35-$50 for painting, for a total of about $65-$85.

I will continue to post images and my progress as I go to show others who wish to make their own grill on a budget.

I have received an email asking to show the difference between the TGF grill and the one I am making. In the below images, the TGF grill is the top one and the one I am making is the bottom one.

The differences are subtle. Mine is going to be thinner, made with a different mesh, and designed slightly differently. I will post more pics as I progress.

Just recently finished putting on chrome edge molding (not door edge moldings) on my stock grill. For a cost under $25, it looks really good.

Took out grill, cleaned, and with a hair dryer, heated molding to make more flexible. Molding has 3M adhesive edge, and fit right onto each slat. Little over one hour to do. Got this idea from PTCruiser friend. Used 21 1/2 ft of a 40 ft roll.

Larry,

Very creative way to get a nice look. I never have cared for the TGF grill but thought the stock grill needed something. How much of the slat does the molding cover??

Maybe I'll give your borrowed idea a try

William,
Nice idea. Keep us posted. The "poor" guys, few of us, NEED cheap ways to enhance our Kats. Larry, I too am curious about the chrome.

Bill...

While you are customizing...would you consider making a grill with teeth?? (similar to the old fighter aircraft from WWII)

If this grill is about $100. I would buy one to fit my "racing" or fun moods on the weekends.

Name the grill the Intimidator series.

OK guys, the molding goes into slat only about 3/8th" but when it is all done, the chrome really stands out and enhances the chrome of the headlights. You still will be able to see the color of your grill, but this really hi-lites the front end appearance. From ten feet away, you'd think it is mostly all chrome. The outlay of afew $$ went a long way on this project. Couldn't find manufactuer's name on box, but product # was ude - 40 s with a phone # for any comments = 214 - 245 - 4525. Was $21.95 for 40 feet roll at a auto body & paint supply store.

Got a digital camera for Valentine's Day gift. Maybe by Labor Day, I'll get it out and read destructions on how to use it.
