Got a confusion call from my dealer in Lincoln Nebr. I bought a prowler from them 10/2. They wanted me to pay them a 5% (over $38,000) "luxury tax". They said it was a Nebraska (?) tax. I think they are confused and that it might be a fed tax. Is there still a federal luxury tax on cars above $38000? If it is a Nebraska tax, I am not inclined to pay them since they did not reveal it and it would have change my negotiating strategy a little. If it is a fed. tax I would be incline to pay them since I remember that (at least) there was one and they just goofed in not collecting it in October! Help!? ------------------ |

mitch there is a lux tax on anything over 38000 dollars and should have been collected at time of purchase. Check with okla tag office to see if lux tax was paid . If it was they had to pay it, and If your inclined to give their money to them ,do it. Get the number paid on lux tax from otc tag office and ask them the exact amount that they are asking you to pay. I would have thought that they would have caught this at a sooner time than this. ------------------ This message has been edited by Lance.d on 01-12-2001 at 05:15 PM |

Carl, There is a fed. luxury tax. The reason the dealerships are forgetting, I had to tell mine about it, is that the Prowler is the only vehicle that goes over $38,000. The only exception is the Viper at Dodge/Chrysler dealerships. I would definitely research this before sending them a check. You might choose to tell them that it was there mistake and they should either eat the cost or pay half. Just a thought, JP ------------------ |

Ah, just another way our friendly government let's you know that you have too much money. If you can afford one of these, you can afford to send us some more loot. Think of it as a pre-death tax cause if you are silly enough to save money for your retirement and then die, the death tax kicks in. ------------------ |

The good news, is that this tax is being phased out and as of Jan 01, 01 the rate was reduced to 4% of that amount over the ceiling, which was $38K last year and should be adjusted for inflation this year. ------------------ |

Yeah, according to what I saw earlier today...The new luxury tax is 4% for vehicles over $40,000. --Rich-- ------------------ |

Carl, I also purchased my Y2K Yellow from Nebraska and I live in Missouri. If my memory is correct I believe you also purchased your Prowler from Russwood. At the time of delivery they should have charged you the luxury tax. I believe it was 5% over $38,000 for 2000. It will be reduced over the next few years until it's eliminated. It's not a Nebraska tax, they will forward it to the Feds. When returning to Missouri I paid state sales tax upon licensing the vehicle. Rick |

Butchcee, Thanks! Just got the car back a couple weeks ago. As far as the Member of the Month thing goes, I think I was just "lucky". I sent in some new pics of the car, and suddenly I was Member of the Month? I wasn't notified in anyway. Doesn't really seem to be a big deal there. I'm honestly not really thrilled with the PPC. I am also a member of the C5 registry (own a Z06 too), and love them. I am new to ProwlerOnline. Hopefully things are better here. So far, they appear to be. The Flames were done at Foreign Auto Body in Redondo Beach, CA. They did a great job. But I don't think their "Striper" did too good of a job. I have only had the car back a couple weeks and already noticed that the pin stripe outlining the flames is splitting on a few of the tips on both doors (for now anyway) I need to give them a call. --Rich-- |

I just purchased a yellow prowler last week from a NJ dealer. They forgot to charge the luxury tax initially, but have now sent me a bill for $277.00. The car was purchased for MSRP. According to the dealer the $38K threshold has not changed but the rate was dropped to 4%. They are also trying to charge me tax on the $1200.00 it is costing to ship the car to me. I will contact my CPA tomorrow to verify the threshold and what the tax applies to and let you know tomorrow. |

I talked to two CPAs today the Federal luxury tax is as follows: 4% over 38k shipping to me is a seperate transaction and is not an added value to the car so it is not to be taxed. |

SHIPPING IS NOT TAXABLE...It should be billed separately...have never paid L-TAX on shipping....it is not in the price of the car....shipping is usually about $1 per mile one way... ------------------ |

Todd, I am in Perris. About 1 1/2 hours from Magic Mountain. (the way I drive) I work in El Segundo. So driving does not bother me. 80+ miles each way every day. We should definitely get together to cruise sometime. Drop me an e-mail. --Rich-- |

yes unfortunatly there is a federal luxury tax on vehicles over $38,000. its exempt on vehicles over 6000 lbs or trucks i believe. please correct me if i'm wrong. but yes unfortunate for all prowler buyers there is a luxury tax. and it is 5% on value over $38000. |

I didn't think I wanted flames, untill I saw these - they are beautiful. I have to get rid of my gravel road before I can think of any kind of paint job. Maybe some day Rich, I'll get mine flamed, but not now. ------------------ |
