I've seen discussions here previously that stress the importance of a transmission cooler protector, and by not having one, mine has pretty much gotten dinged to death.

My question is regarding the chrome protectors that ya'll have discussed here. It seems that although they would be firmer than the fins on the cooler, that they would still get pretty scrached up since they are chrome. How do the chrome ones look after some normal usage? Thanks.

I estimate I have 500 miles with the chrome "shield" on the trans cooler. Not a scratch or nick on it. Perhaps the only after market accessory that both i) improves the look of the car and ii) performs a valid function to protect your car.

Don't over analyze this issue. Spend the $230 and get the shield.

I like the look of the fins and don't want to cover them up. With two Prowlers over the last year, I have not had one ding/nick/dent in either.

A buddy has 15K miles on his and doesn't have any nicks on his fins either.

How do you bang your up without backing over a curb or someone intentionally kicking it?

I'm not sure how it gets nicked up. Rocks, I guess, but I don't have any nicks on any other parts of the car. I never back up over anything either.

I would assume that someone could kick with the toe of their shoe, and bend up the fins. I will test this theory on Gary's red cat at GC! It's for sale, so take another $200 off his price!

The geometry of a rock coming off of the back wheel and doing a u-turn to hit the fins or coming off the wheel then hitting the ground then reversing directions to hit the fins (on a car moving away from that rock) seems impossible. Sounds kinda like the JFK mystery bullet theory to me.

I think if one had enough dents from rocks doing this, the sides of your car would be a mess with all the scratches from the debris.

Trey - I agree. Doesn't seem possible, that is why I'd look elsewhere for causes. Mine is perfect?
