On page 58 of the August 2000 edition of Cigar Aficianado under the title "Driving Passions - Which of Todays New Cars Will One Day be Collectors Items", it references the Prowler and specifically the special edition Prowler (ie. Woodward Edition and Black Tie Edition) as likely collectible American cars of the future that are built today. They intentionally mention and favor the Plymouth brand vs. the Chrysler nameplate. They also mention the PT Cruiser. If Dr. Ru gets hired to touch up the ceiling at St. Peters Cathedral that probably won't hurt Prowler values either......... |

Guess I would be impressed by that comment until they slipped and showed their lack of research or knowledge by placing the PT Cruiser in the same class. Last I knew they planned to pump those things out from a new factory. That kills any chance of it being a collectors item if theres hundreds of thousands out there We own one, frankly I think the car is crap. Looks good, uncomfortable, underpowered, etc. Its all looks and a good price. A Neon with a nice body ------------------ |

I agree with you Tim about the Cruiser. I don't like the Cruiser but thats just me. With a 6 cylinder in the Cruiser in future years I think the Cruiser in 30 years might end up being like the '64 1/2-'68 289 today. The standard Prowler, in terms of value, might be more like the Boss 302 and maybe the Woodward and Black Tie will be like the Boss 429 and '67-'68 Shelbys. Not in terms of hp but in terms of multiples of original cost or replacement cost of a new similar car. It was interesting to read that comment in Cigar Aficionado though from an author who doesn't own a Prowler. As a matter of fact the Prowler and the Cruiser were the only American cars he selected. Back in 1970 whoever thought a $5,000 Boss 429 would be worth $50,000-$60,000 today (#2 condition)? Im not saying a Prowlers will be worth booooooookoooooooooooo bucks in 30 years, but I'm not denying it either. |

Lets remember that the only things that are considered valuable are things that very few people saved. If everyone saves something because of past history, then the value won't be that great...Baseball cards from years ago are very valuable...ten years ago people started collecting again becausre of past values. So many people collected in the last ten years prices haven't increased much. Probably the only Prowles that will get big increases in value are those that are put away with delivery miles. ------------------ |

Agreed. I think you will have a lot of low mileage Prowlers out there. But I don't think A LOT of original owners will store their Prowlers in pure stock form. They'll also want the space back in their garage that the Cat takes up. They'll trade it in for a Mercedes or Lexus given their age profile. They will have had their fun and move onto something new. Many Prowler owners are in their 50's and won't keep their cars for 20 or 30 years. Moreover, cars will either get handed down or sold to someone who won't likely take as great of care with the car as the original purchaser. I bet a large chunk of Prowlers in 10 years from now will be sitting outside keeping the pavement free of rain, tree sap and bird bombs. How many wives will be sympathetic to a 10 year old car that isn't practical and blocks the kids' big wheels that was handed down by their father-in-law? Help us all if production goes beyond 2003. We need help now that production is going beyond 2001! Lastly, good collectible cars of which the Prowler is not one yet, go thru cycles. Basically its a downward line for 20 years. For most cars its a downward trend forever. How many original Prowler owners are going to wait 20 years? Less than 100% is my guess. And this is when the values will begin to take-off. One ace that is of particular note is that the 60's/early 70's 442's, Cudas, TA's, Stangs, tri-carb GTOs etc. were initally purchased by people in their 20's. These people have fond memories of these cars, and today in their 50's have the money to go re-live some memories and dreams. This has driven up the values of these vehibles, not to mention the low hp vehicles from '72-mid 80's that has resulted in a diminished supply of potential collectible autos from this period except mid and later built '70's TA's and more recently the mid '80's built Buick GNX. Want to buy a future collectible? Go buy a car driven by Sox & Martin, Petty, etc. and Super Cat Cougar. This is and will be the next trend in collectible autos. Most people buying new Prowlers today aren't in their 20's. When the now 20 year olds reach 50 they won't have the same fond memories of cruisn, buddies and babes in their Prowlers 30 years earlier. They won't have the same desire as the group who purchase 30 year old cars today. This is my thought. Back to the referenced article, it is interesting that at least one person unrealted to the Prowler picked the vehicle as a potential collectible vehicle. Maybe the guy who wrote the article drives a Yugo or, alternatively, maybe he drives the only '68 convertible Z/28 ever built. Sorry for the rambling. Have to run. Jr. wants to play street hockey in the garage where my CAT IS AT!!!!!!!!! OH NOOOO!!! |

Enthu: You need to purchase a air pillow storage cover, so those street hockey pucks will just bounce off! And those bicycles with the handlebar covers missing, make nice art work on the Prowler sides (low cost flames). ------------------ |

lol phxsuncat! Everytime I hear Jr. yell in the garage, "Shot, Scooorrrrrre" I cringe. Maybe I should only worry when I hear him say, "Shot, wide to the right." Can't wait until he wants to start working on his golf swing in the garage when its raining out..... Glad he is not into metal jarts. Whatever happened to the game of chess or foosball? Guess I'll have to draw the line if the kids want to use the Cat as a baseball backstop as in the Saturn commercial. Same goes for target practice with live amo! |
