I found a hardtop for my prowler, problem is, its in Arizona and I am in South Dakota. Does anyone have any good ideas on shipping a hardtop? The gentleman does not have the original crate. thanks, Dale
ps. is anyone coming to the Deadwood Cruise from arizona and bringing a car trailer?

Best way would be for someone to put it on their car and drive it to the event.

The original crate is huge and filled with form fitting foam.

Take the following tools (or equivalent) with you to re-adjust the hardtop pins, as it will fit differently on each car. Be sure to adjust when front latches are latched.

Inside nut - 3/8" flat open end wrench (maybe 7/16" flat closed end wrench) - tightens top to pin - Always hold still as pin turns (pinches top with middle nut)
middle nut - 1/2" open end wrench - tightens pin to the top - use small flat adjustable pliers to hold bottom nut
Bottom pin nut - 9/16" open end wrench - adjusts pin height thru decklid - top up/down - use small flat adjustable pliers to hold middle nut

We will be spending two weeks on the road, with a first week before the event in Wyoming. To pack for two weeks, without a trailer, would make it impossible to put soft top down to allow for hardtop. Not enough room.....if we were just going to the event only, we could have made it possibly work out.

If you have a hardtop, you can put on a roof rack. Problem solved. (It's not YOUR hardtop, what do you care).

dhp, youre best bet,is to have the person, who is selling you the top, wrap it completely in large bubble wrap at least 4 to 5 layers and ship it freight and dont forget to insure it.i would think that much bubble wrap would protect it.it will have to go freight because of size and weight.i would also compare prices w/a car shipper, who could put it in a pickup bed or would have room on a truck and tie it down, might be cheaper than freight.large bubble wrap should work real well.putting the top in a box,if you could find one would be a waste of time.jmo iwould go with bubble wrap, providing the seller is willing to do it.

If you really have to have it shipped I would suggest getting a pallet, some 2x3s or 2x4s, stud a box frame around the pallet, get some cardboard (plywood would be better) & staple it on to cover it up, Wrap the hardtop in moving blankets, secure it to the pallet with straps.

This may not be the cheapest way to go but cheap enough, most pallets are free for the taking.
At least the shipper can easily handle it safely with the least chance of damage.
I had a Prowler motor & trans-axle shipped together on one pallet to me in this manner, except for the moving blankets & it worked like a charm

hope this helps

The shipping crates were huge. I disassemble the crate at the trucking company, on the dock and installed the hardtop. It was made out of plywood and had foam sprayed around the top to make it secure in the middle of the box. There was other packing material in it, also.
The shipping varied according to the destination. when I ship the repaired center caps, the USPS price varies by several dollars. I just shipped four to Colo and it was about $ 8.50. Some are about $ 5.
I wouldn't trust bubble wrap. The bubbles would break every time it got moved or when the truck hit a bump and eventually it would not be very well protected, in my opinion.

I agree the hardtop would never survive being shipping wrapped in only bubble wrap, it's to bulky to be handled by hand by 1 person unwrapped & even handled with 2 people wrapped in bubble wrap would still be disastrous. I don't believe any common carrier or specialized carrier would accept it that way.

Can you imagine a forklift trying to pick up a bubble wrapped only hardtop, it would sound like the 4th of July in the big shitty of Detroit, POP POP POP POP POP POP. LOL

Your right the original shipping crates were huge, I kept mine in case I ever had to reship a hardtop, right now they are stacked in my R-chives with spare Prowler tires & rims on top of them so for me they aren't really taking up anymore room than the tires would have.
