I am a new member to this list and have had my Prowler for about 6 months. I love the car and the way it drives. I am also amazed at the attention it gets. The first improvement was to try and improve the wheel appearance. I removed all the brake dust painted the calipers and rotor hubs red and then started looking for a solution for the chrome peeling on the inside hubs of the rims. I developed a process that provides an 11 mil mirror chrome finish. If anyone is interested in repairing their front rims with this finish contact me at Sharkbyte2@juno.com. I included before and After pixs with this post. This is a low cost solution to having the rims rechromed and is in the $35 per wheel range. Regards, Rick Blake |

The material is a thin plastic sheet which is flexable but not enough to follow the outside contours of the rim. It is a great fix for the inside peeling problem. The mirror chrome finish is on the underside of the film which has an adhesive coating on the back. It is easy to apply just peel off backing press to inside of rim, trim edges and remove protective top coating. Rick Blake |

Looks great but im wondering how durable it will be over time as it gets wet and weathered. Most adhesives eventually fall apart and start to either peel or curl. Looks good in this pic though. That is the worst peeling Ive seen. Also, how does it cover the weights? This message has been edited by 99prowler99 on 07-29-2008 at 11:58 AM |

A smart business man protects his trade secrets. And YES you can purchase the inserts from me. Front $35 per wheel +$6 shipping overnight. They are cut to a specific arc to fit the inside contour of the wheel hub. The glue is industrial strength. If you try to remove it once it is set in place you will peel it off in small pieces. Mine has been perfect for 6 months. But my cat has not seen water, ice, or smow / salt. It is a fair weather car and always will be. The two piece process was to enable better alignment therefore their are two seams. They are Butt seams and hard to find unless you feel for them. I have included a picture and the flash at an angle made the seem more visible. BTW the RED object in the lower left is the actual caliper. The Red in the middle of the pix is the reflection of the caliper in the inside of the rim hub. Weights are attached to the inset surface with double face tape just like before. I feel this will be a very durable solution as long as reasonable care and useage are applied. Regards, Rick Blake |

My rear rims had very little pitting so I just worked with the front rims. I am working with someone off list who expressed interest in the rear rims. So I will be developing an insert process for the rear. As for the trailer I do not have a rim to work with and I believe I read that it is a 15" rim. If it has the same slope on the inside hub I believe the arch on the inserts for the 17" front rim should work just fine. If some wants to try it on their trailer rims I would be willing to ship inserts for one wheel as a test. Regards, Rick Blake |

Blake I have pitting on my trailer wheels and would try it out on them and let you know it fits, I also have a spare pair of trailer wheels that will need them also. If you want to send out inserts for one of them I would be willing to test it out for you. how clean & smooth do the rims have to be? if their is any severe below grade pitting will the inserts mimic them?? toys |

There has been interest in Chrome inserts for the rear wheels. I am working on this and they should be available in the next week or so. Also I will commit to making them available for the Trailer wheels if anyone other than "TOYS" is interested. I believe this is an excellent low cost solution for the inside hub peeling problem and is much cheaper than re chroming the complete rim. Regards, Rick Blake |

How easily is this film scratched? For example how would you clean this? With just soap and water or could wax or polish also be used. Will repeated cleanings even with just soap and water eventually create fine scratches on the surface face and eventually make the finish appear to be dull? i think i would worry about durability.i would like to see it,with about 10.000 miles on it.hot ,cold wet, rocks.i would think that to avoid all the lumps and bumps from the old peeling would have to be removed before applying the product,if not it will show, and if you had to remove it for some reason, damage or wear, when you remove it will it also pull off old chrome that wasnt removed before.do you have more info.for it to look perfect, you would have to completly remove all old loose chrome. ------------------ This message has been edited by catfish on 08-15-2008 at 05:40 PM |

Some of the latest posts have brought up some interesting concerns about durability of the chrome inserts. I can not speak to 10K miles in water ,snow, rocks, mud, heat & and the ICE road of Alaska. But I have about 1k miles since I did my front rims and they look just like the day I put them on. This material is an 11 mil thick Polycarbonate sheet with the Mirror Chrome finish on the underside side of the material. The adhesive is industrial strength 3M. The TDS states a high Temp of 250 Deg F and a low brittle Temp of -211 Deg F. The surface will scratch with about the same effort that it takes to scratch paint or a chrome finish. So I guess it comes down to a $10 paint job on the inside hubs, a $35 Mirror chrome insert finish that shines better than the original chrome finish. Or YA!! just bite the bullet and go for a $300 to $400 total re chrome job per wheel. The durability of anything is like anything else. It depends on how you take care of it. For my money this was a low cost quality solution for a really UGLY problem. BTW painting the hubs was never a solution for me YUK!!!!! $1000+ for re chrome a bit over the top. I got better things to spend my money on, Like GAS!!!! Just trying to help other Prowlers stuck with the same UGLY problem from DC. ------------------ |

Rich I got the templates for the trailer wheels in today, I won't have a chance until Tuesday or so to try them out for fit. The insides of the spares I have are so bad that anything has got to better than what they look like like now. Thanks so much for your efforts I will get back to you as soon as I can |
