Has the car been sitting long? Did you switch gas stations? Does it do it warm or cold? Have you changed anything? Does it run rough at any other speeds? |

sounds like a dirty throttle body or plugs. I would start with the throtle body |

I am thinking clogged injector nozzle / s and gunked throttle body. I would run some injector cleaner through it before I go serious deep into engine. Vac. guage will answer if leaking around throttle body gasket. This message has been edited by 392HEMI on 01-30-2007 at 10:26 PM |

Some will totally disagree with this, but you can use Transmission Fluid as fuel injector cleaner. If you read the labels, they are basically the same. If you are going on a long trip, add an ounce per gallon of gas. It worked unbelievably well on my Goldwing m/c. |

I use Lucas fuel injector cleaner in our gas tanks about every two months, keeps those injectors clean. But for you,,,,I'd start by buying a can of Sea Foam [gas stabilizer and injector cleaner] first. The local auto auctions use Sea Foam on cars that have a rough idle or rpm speed as you describe,,,,,,and their success rate at fixing this conditions is quite high. Geno, I use cheapo crap. My motorcycle, the old one, was running really rough and the dealership in Greensburg was moving to a new location the next day so they didn't want me to leave it. I put about 5 ounces in it about three straight tankfuls and all of a sudden it was running fine. Prior to that it was running the worst it ever ran. I have been doing this for at least 20 years. I only do it if I am going to be doing some X-way driving. |

Open the hood, start the engine and rev it up slowly to 1300rpm while watching the serpentine belt near the alternator. If the belt is vibrating that may be the cause of the roughness you feel. The pulley on the alternator is designed to eliminate the vibration. It's possible there is something wrong with the pulley. I welded mine solid after it failed and now have that roughness similar to what your talking about. Is it possible for these pulleys to lock up? Maybe RPL will chime in on when these pulleys were first used on the Prowler. If this is what it is there is no danger to the engine or the car. BTW Mine failed at 14,000 miles. This is the pulley I am speaking of. This message has been edited by MDProwler on 01-31-2007 at 07:19 AM |
