I would like to know why the gas cap in on the passenger side. How many time have you pulled up to a pump and forgot? I can't remember any of my others on that side. Why not put it on the drivers side? what percentage on right, left or back? Is this important or what? |

Gub, I’m certainly not an expert, but having vehicles with caps on both sides, I’ve pondered this before as well. Here’s what I came up with. Driver Side placement – I would bet that it’s simply a question of the cheapest option of the two in running the cable for the interior flap release. Can’t think of any other reason why this would be better. Passenger Side placement – While it’s more “expensive”, I think some designer’s might think it is more convenient. In today’s “gas market”, there is so much marketing material at the pumps that it’s practically a solid wall. That combined with narrower lanes makes it sometimes difficult to open you car door without hitting something if the cap is on the driver side. You just have a whole lot more room for exit from the driver’s door when the cap is on the passenger side. Again, just my opinion, but I would bet the difference is simply in lead designers that have dinged their door at the pump and those that haven’t. |

remember when they were in the back, behind the license plate... mine... Vipers and Prowlers, passenger side... and a 68 GTO, behind the license plate personally, I prefer them on the passenger side...no danger of hitting the big yellow poles with your door that way |

I have to agree that having the fuel fill port on the passenger side is counter to logic. I can't remember how many times I've pulled up to the gas pump in the Prowler and said.."Dam it..I'm on the wrong side!!~" All I can figure is that not having it on the driver side "smooths out" the appearance of the side..which is seen 99% of the time?? |

I know for a fact that most Mercedes are on the right side. I was told one big reason was for safety. If you ever run out of gas, they don't want you to be filling your gas tank next to traffic. We have four Mercedes and never ran out of gas This message has been edited by pumpkin on 11-06-2005 at 08:11 AM |

Chromer hit it! The Plymouth designers knew there would be a guy in New Castle, In. who would be taking 4 million pictures of his Prowlers,,,,and didn't want the nasty looking gas door showing in his pictures taken of the driver's side. |

I think because the sender is on the driver side and the tank would fill with less problem and plumbing would be easier with a clear shot into the tank with the fill opposite...except for the vent problem. Is this tank unique to the Prowler? If it was pirated from another car--say a minivan, maybe it was the other way around in the vehicle. |

1999 Prowler = Passenger side 2004 Durango = Drivers side 2005 PT Cruiser = Convert Passengers side I prefer it on the passenger side for many of the reasons mentioned above. |

One thing I did forget to add... I've seen several cars that have a marking of some kind in the dash to remind you which side the fill is on. That's the best scenaario to me regardless of side. |

I would agree with pumpkin, SAFETY is the #1 reason. Run out of gas, smoking with window down and driver side impact |

After a little research found this info: Question: Why is the gas tank on the right in some cars and the left on others? Apparently, this question has plagued car owners for some time. We found a number of theories in various automotive forums. Here are a few: On German vehicles, the gas door is always on the right so people don't have to stand in a traffic lane when fueling on a roadway. The gas filler will almost always be on the opposite side of the vehicle from the exhaust pipe. This last theory appears to be correct. Indeed, none other than Car Talk's Click and Clack, in the employ of NPR, confirm this last hypothesis. According to the boys, there is no universal standard for placement of the gas filler, but "the exhaust system has to go down one side of the car, and the gasoline filler tube generally goes on the other." So it's the vehicle's engineering design that determines the location of the gas tank. This message has been edited by pumpkin on 11-06-2005 at 07:47 PM |

I own a 1978 and 79 Dodge LiL' RED EXPRESS and the fill is next to the driver side door right behind the chrome stack pipe. Is this not to safe? They have a stainless shield over the exhaust but does get hot on a long hauls but have never had a problem, 78 has 50,000 and the 79 has 112,000 miles. Never really thought of it until Chromers post. |
