This Plymouth Prowler time capsule lies buried underground until 2048.

The North American town of Tulsa put this brand-new Plymouth Prowler roadster inside the earth 22 years ago, in the distant 1998. The media largely glossed over the event back then, but the Internet audience has shown renewed interest in it lately.

The car is the town’s symbolic message and gift to the generations living 50 years in the future. As such, it is prohibited to unearth it until 2048. In 1957, when Tulsa celebrated its 50th foundation anniversary, it buried another Plymouth underground, but things did not work out well. When the car was finally excavated in 2007, it was discovered that underground water found a way inside and destroyed the interior and the body. You may watch the video for more details on that one.

To prevent the history from repeating itself, the town authorities encased the new Plymouth in a thick, firmly sealed aluminum box. We will know if it worked when the roadster gets extracted in another 28 years.

Be sure to watch the video about Miss Belvedere.

Who will be in Tulsa in 2048? Sounds like an event happening in the future, I'll be there.

"to prevent history from repeating itself". How did they know the '57 was a mess back in '98??? They didn't uncover it until 2007.

The Prowler is buried but above grade. It has a much better chance than the 57 Belvedere.

This is from the Tulsarama DVD.
Note, it is one of the last vid clips of Boyd Cottington who died not long after.

Mike, I was hoping you would post a link to that video. Thank YouSo Much. I sure miss your event videos. They were always exceptional. For obvious reasons this one is one of my most treasured.

CJ actually got her first Prowler ride in that car on Woodward during Dream Cruise thanks to Jerry. It's a pre-production '99 that Chrysler of whoever still retains ownership to, if anyone still remembers by then.

My favorite memory is Richard telling Grand Touring Louise that she did a lousy parking job, from across the parking lot. For you newer folks, Richard is BLIND. There were FREE drinks at happy hour at the hotel and she didn't want to be late.

And it all started when Rich Ware saw a story about Tulsa's centennial celebration and the unearthing of the car.
He thought it might be a good reason for a huge event...and it sure was.

I have posted this before but here is more from Tulsarama http://youtu.be/Qi5H7qb4rI4

This is what makes this site great. Think of all of the great memories and friendships that have been formed because of the cars that never would have happened......

And nobody bought their car thinking this is how it would work out up to 23 years later. It just did. I have said a hundred times "in the early days it was all about the cars but soon became all about the people." For us, a number of casual acquaintances have become life long best of friends. We are amped up to see many of them in Texas.

When the Prowler was put in the tomb, It was sealed and pressurized with some sort of gas. So it must be under a small amount of pressure inside which will keep water out.

Quite possibly due to the FREE DRINKS. lol
You turned right into the parking lot and it had back to back sections, divided by strips of dirt with trees. Nice lobby, which was open and you could see up to the second and third floors. The parking lot was hot, for sure.

Carl Spike from Colorado had a plan for each of his grandkids to have a Prowler. His grandson was along for Tulsarama so I made sure he had a copy of the DVD thinking he might take it with him to the 2048 celebration.
