Rlp99prowler Prowler Newbie From:Cary, North carolina, USA |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My 99 prowler came with what I believe are the chamber mufflers , (side note) the person I bought it form also gave me an original triangular muffler. Original tail pipes with what I believe are the baffles are still in place, want to leave those on, problem is, it is just way too loud and the drone inside the cabin is almost unbearable, my question, will everything quiet down and the drone inside the cabin somewhat be eliminated with the original type muffler put back on or I see a lot of the owners talk about putting the Brola mufflers on, looking for some input on mainly getting rid of the drone in the cockpit !! and a not so loud sound out of the exhaust, thanks guys, Ron |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I put a Borla system on mine, it lasted one day. Drone is unbearable, it was for me anyway. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I ha a Borla CAT back on my last prowler and I LOVED it. if ANYONE has the Borla Muffler, I want to buy it. I have found the tips, the pipes. ONLY thing I am missing is the Muffler. I have not gone with the "Sweet Thunder" I think is what they are called, because I heard that they can be too loud and cause a drone in the car. I do not remember the Borla installed with factory CATS having a bad drone, but then, I was 20 years younger. I LOVE the tips of the Borla Exhaust with the engraved Prowler. Small touch, but I LOVE them. Good luck! John |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rip,,, If you are not happy with the exhaust system now using...put the stock system back on. I had the Borla cat-back system which was a perfect sound for me with no drone effects at all. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We have had Borla for 21 years and it’s perfect for us. But there still is a drone with the top up. Now with the hardtop it’s reduced. If you want the least amount of drone go back to stock muffler and exhaust tips with baffles. It’s still not quiet even with stock but about as quiet as your going to get it. I was thinking about getting sweet Thunder until I rode in a Prowler with them installed, Fun around town but if your driving any distance they would be unbearable for me. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This may be a factor to consider as well - my old car had the gears - I have a set of gears, have not installed them yet. Drone, IMHO, is caused by the car hitting certain RPM's. IF the car is in an RPM range that causes the harmonic situation to be correct, then you will get a drone. I noticed that my car shifted in and out of gears a TON more on the WV trip than my last car. Steve Clark informed me that the gears will in fact stop the car from "looking " for a gear in the hills. So a Rich says, the Hart Top makes a difference, and I believe the gears do to. We will see. John |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The gears will help to not search more gears on hills and such, but with be higher rpm when riding at higher speed, which makes car louder also. Stock exhaust and gears are the most quiet, but might not be the most fun. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There were two Borla systems. One directly from Borla is identified by carbon fiber tips. The system sold by MOPAR made by Borla had polished tips with a cat logo. Even Borla preferred the additional refinement that the MOPAR system displayed. I have driven vehicles which exhibit a drone at speed. I've never considered the MOPAR system harsh, top down, soft top up or hardtop, but sound is an individual preference. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I tried the 24" Sweet Thunder muffler about 7+ years ago and switched back to stock due to the drone problem that others have mentioned. (most noticeable/unbearable @ 60MPH in Drive with the top up) (It was fun for awhile) At that same time, I had found a set of (never installed) Prowler exhaust Tips on eBay. They also had never had the baffles installed on them either so there were no holes where the baffles would have been riveted. So I took the tips to a muffler shop and had 3" sleeves welded inside the tips and took them home. Then, using a dremel tool, I smoothed out the weld and had them re-chromed prior to installation. So now I have a stock muffler with exhaust tips that have no baffles (and no holes in the sides of the tips). The edge of each tip is thick, approx 1/8", and not a sharp edge like the stock tips. There is NO drone and I like the sound. (And with all the effort to smooth out the welds, I am never messing with the exhaust again!) I know, long story, but I hope this helps. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() quote: The 1st Pigeon Forge event I drove my car pulling the trailer & the hunting in hills was really annoying. Dropped down into auto stick and it will hold high gear & even pulling the trailer it pulled most all hills fine, when it did start to slow I just dropped a gear. Much better than it constantly hunting & I increased gas mileage to the best it ever got ------------------ |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There are two sweet thunder mufflers. See below:
I've always thought our 24" version had a deeper tone to it then the 18". It's a pretty minimal difference but my opinion. We've sold hundreds if not thousands of these over the years and everyone is really happy. I know we are talked about in a lot of forums and online. I'm not aware of a drone issue with our product. We can also make these in 304 stainless but they are $200 more for either size. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, |
