They are pricey, suck fuel down like no tomorrow, insurance company will hit you in the head with a baseball bat and steal your wallet then take your first born. lol great cars, but a little unpredictable if they start to slide sideways. My suggestion is buy the one your like, and enjoy it and if you get tired of it try another model year. I had a 96 that I wish I had never got rid of, and will get another soon. Others here will chime in here to see if the newer models had handling issues, I can tell you mine scared the living Sh*t out of me several times when it got a little squirrely it did not want to recover properly. I love my Z06 Vette for the driving experience much better than the Viper. But then again the Viper was appreciated by all that seen her, and nobody ever comments on the Z06 hardly at all. So it all depends on why you like it. This message has been edited by Prowl 36 on 11-08-2007 at 08:04 AM |

Some of the guys here have probably already told you this stuff, but just in case they didn't
If you are buying from a private party, see if someone from your local VCA (Viper Club of America) can check it out for you. Carfax doesn't always tell the whole story, a lot of Vipers get damage that is not reported. The Gen I & II's make sure that the side sills are clean with no bubbles! Also check for cracks in the hood near the hinges. Hoods & Sills are way expensive. If the tires are old, get new tires. Old tires turn into ice skates on these cars... There may be plenty of tread, but they wont hook up well for you. You might also try calling JonB @ Partsrack... He is a Viper Guru. He may also know some really clean 96-97's are for sale. http://partsrack.com I just bought a really sweet 2008 hood from him, awesome guy, knows everything Viper. |

quote: LOL... My first Viper was a 93... I bought it on eBay, sight unseen. In fact I had never even sat in a Viper I had it transported from Delaware. It got here, it was as loud as thunder. Had orig factory tires on it. I learned a lot about Vipers quickly At the time I thought nothing about buying the car online like that... I had bought 2 Prowlers much the same way. Now I know that I was extremely lucky! That car was in great shape, but it could have easily been a money pit. If it had A/C, I probably would have kept it... It was an awesome car. |

Hey Joe Cat, Gary C hooked me up with Woodhouse and I got a smoking deal, had to leave Louisville early to meet the truck back in Buffalo, delivered it to my door. I thought they are suppose to go down the road sideways, I better look into some tires. jpconcept |

...I've owned several each of all 3 generations and I prefer driving the Gen III ...the tires car be a little slippery on cold/wet pavement so be careful if weather is a factor where you live....don't jump into the car the first time to see what it will do unless you are a really good driver with lots of performance cars in your history, it will BITE YOU HARD....most Vipers are wrecked in the first few weeks of ownership, and most are single car, high speed accidents....usually the rear end "gets away" from the driver.....many are lost on interstate ramps or anywhere there are fast corners to play with....they can be dangerous, so take your time getting used to the car and enjoy the ride, THEY ARE A BLAST... |

Adding a short throw shifter can help a lot too. Even if you get one of the MGW short shift knobs... I didn't like the sloppy shifter in my Gen III. I first changed to a MGW shorty knob, then added the SVS Shifter. Shifting is more positive now, kinda notchy, but good. Bad shifts happen |

I ordered a new Viper the same day I read in Motor Trend that they were actually going to build the thing. The thing I loved about the car was that it was a balls-out hot car with no excuses for the lack of such niceties such as roll up windows, a top that was only marginally useful in a hard rain, and virtually no space for luggage. In short, it was an enthusiast's car. Since My dealer is small he got no priority and I finally got my Viper early in the '94 model year. When the GTS was being produced those of us who had Vipers got the chance to buy the beautiful blue with white stripes GTS coupe. Lots of enhancements over the old RT-10 that made it a more "civilized" car. My family loved it so I eventually sold the '94 to a fireman in Anchorage AK. I missed the '94 RT-10 and never really enjoyed the coupe all that much so last year I sold it with the intention of buying a Prowler. I'm so glad I did, I enjoy driving my Prowler so much more than I did the Viper GTS coupe. |
