Could anyone provide the breakdown of the VIN-especially knowing which digit represents the model year of a Kat, and what number represents what year. The reason I ask is that someone locally is selling a 2001 in Purple and as far as I thought (and as indicated on this forums "stats" link) that color wasn't offered in 2001 (not even on the Canadian Kats). Any info is appreciated. Is $54K Cdn a decent price for one with <500km??? And finally are there any new ones at any of the Western province dealerships that any Canuck forum members might know that still exist? Thanks Frank This message has been edited by frankmp on 06-06-2003 at 11:19 PM |

Frank, welcome to the POA. The biggest problem is the fact that I do not know how much money that is in US $ or how many miles that is. Therefore I cannot give you an answer. Some other Canuck will jump in and help you out, I am sure. I did not want you to think you were being ignored. Post the conversion and you will get any answer you want, regarding how good of a deal it is, probably. You can go to the owners registry and see what the VIN are and figure it out. I will post a link. http://www.prowleronline.com/ownreg/listprowler.php?sort=year%2Cvinsort&submit=GO Apparently it is the 11th digit. 1997 = V, 1999 = X, 2000 = Y, 2001 = 1, 2002 = 2. Again welcome and hope you can find a cat in your budget and color. This message has been edited by ed monahan on 06-07-2003 at 01:46 AM |

Thanks Ed for the link. As of yesterday conversion was 1.3669; therefore the $55Kcdn converts to ~$40Kus. A kilometer is 5/8 of a mile therefore the unit has ~500miles. Frank |

Frank: Welcome. This a great site and members are extremely helpful and sharing. There are others who frequent this site who are far more knowledgeable than I am, but in MY opinion the price is about 5 or 6 grand (US) too high. The owner may have that in it, but several people on this site state they they've paid in the mid 30s or lower for a similar year and miles. That said, if purple is the color you want, the owner has taken great care of it and since it's local and you can see it and have it checked out by your mechanic - all these things factor in what may be A GOOD DEAL FOR YOU. Of course, you may be able to beat the seller down on his price. I paid $39,600 for a new yellow last July. Now that seems a little high, but to me it was what I wanted, when I wanted it and I KNOW I've gotten 4 or 5 grand worth of enjoyment out of my Kat over the past 11 months. Best of luck in your search! ------------------ |

There are probably not a lot of low mileage purples since they were the first ones, mostly. I have to agree with Randy that $ 40,000 is a tad high in this market but I would have loved to have gotten that deal 4 years ago. Look at the FREE CLASSIFIEDS on this site and you may find a better deal. Also check eBay. Be a little patient and you will get what you want. Thanks for the conversion lesson. |

You're right Randy, this forum is chaulk full of info. Now was purple a 2001 color?? I tried looking at the VIN link and had trouble figuring what digit represents the model year and color....ie not only does the 11th digit vary so does the 2nd, 8th, 9th within and between model years. Thanks again......... Frank ps- I think you're right about the asking price being a bit high. I need to research what a dealer may be asking for a new one if any are still around. |

Frank: I'm not knowledgable about the VIN #s or if the purple was available in '01. Follow Ed's advice and go to ebay and you might want to try autotraders. I'd decide on color preference first and work from there. It seems to me there are more cars available in the Mullholand (dark blue), black and silver. You may kind what you want in theses colors faster and at a better price if these colors are at the top of your list. ------------------ |

Frank: Check out the Orange listed under the Free Classifieds section. Ed set up a link. Orange looks fantastic on a Kat! ------------------ |

Frank, I cannot count. It is the 10th digit, the one BEFORE the V. Sorry about that. I just double checked after reading your post. I simply miscounted. ^ ^ If you go all the way to the bottom of the link I posted above, it has the break down for all of the digits. I should have scrolled farther down last night. I knew it was on here somewhere but could not remember where. This message has been edited by ed monahan on 06-08-2003 at 01:20 AM |

Hey Frankmp, did you ever check out the FACTS & STATS page on this site? It has the production figures and shows that they did NOT produce a 2001 Purple. I think the last year for that color was 1999. Check it out, it's a great page showing all the colors and stats for each one... Good luck finding one, they're a really fun car to have/drive. |

quote: Thats the first thing I did as indicated in my first post and that's the whole reason I want to understand the VIN number. This guy says he has a 2001 purple. Now I can confirm model year with the VIN....unless he re-painted the car...... |

I've seen them use the color purple in a description, when it was actually the metalic blue. If you look at it and it is purple, then it is not the original paint or not a 2001. As you have heard, the price is a little high at the current exchange rate. As others have pointed out there are deals out there. Good luck and enjoy it when you find the one the meets your requirements. |
