I was driving the Prowler today and it became stuck in 2nd gear. While coasting down a hill, it then shut off. I restarted it with no trouble but it was still in 2nd gear. About 5min. later the Service Engine Soon light came on and stayed on and I also noticed that the speedometer did NOT work and no miles were accumulated. From reading the board, I'm assuming I'm in limp mode. My biggest question is whether it is safe to drive it to the dealer which is 5 miles away. I'd rather not flat bed it b/c I don't trust that the person will know how to tow it correctly. Thanks for the help! |

I'd drive it to the dealer for sure,, sounds like a input or output sensor on the tranny,,, Happend to a lot of us,,, When you get it fixed, buy one of each and keep them in the trunk for future needs. They are easy to replace, maybe have the tech show you or buy a manual. Good luck,, ------------------ |

Limp Mode, I have never herd of it. I hope it doesn't happen. Does anyone know what causes it? |

It happened to my cat several times before they finally replaced the entire computer. No problems since. It is safe to drive it 5 miles, just use common sense and don't take off really fast and don't drive too fast, period. If you are afraid to drive it, disconnect the battery for 10 minutes and it may be okay, temporarily. Mine was intermittent and I would turn it off and restart it and it would then be okay. When I put it in reverse it would then go into limp mode again. It took a few trips to the dealer before they got it right. Good luck. (Or take Todd's advice and use Viagra) Either way you should be smiling in the near future. |

Daryl - the above info is correct. Temporary fix is to disconnect battery for 10 minutes - get it to the dealer. Nothing serious............

JD or Dan - which one of the two is most likely the problem child? Or is it both? Thanks |

Not sure Larry, I had my input sensor replaced but I have heard other change the output. If I remember, these are $15 or less for each. A good investment. I also carry a extra serpentine belt with me as I have torn one once. Had to trailer the car home, a sad site to see for such a quick fix in the field. ------------------ This message has been edited by jd2ksilver on 07-12-2001 at 09:41 AM |

Ally Cat, The input sensor has the highest failure rate. If you go to your dealer and ask them what the fallout is on the input vs the output sensor? They will tell you the input sensor has the highest fallout. I believe its due to the low tolerance to heat. The coil inside gives out or metal sludge gets poured all over the tip of the input sensor. The last time my input sensor quit, the tip was full of black sludge. When I went to touch it, it was like powdered sand. I have replaced my input sensor twice since I have owned my cat. As soon as I feel my tranny starting to shift very sluggish. I know it's time to change my input sensor. What happenes when the input sensor begins to fail. The PCM does not know what the TCM rpms are. As the situation begins to get worse, you will begin to experiance gear shifts at all the wrong times. You will not get that crisp 1st to 2nd kick. It will be more like 3rd to 4th when your shifting from 1st to 2nd.

Just wanted to tell everyone thank you for your help. I drove the car to the dealer today and they're pretty sure it's a sensor. |
