fibertopThis is a really easy center cap repair that you can actually do proactively, before your tabs break. It involves epoxying a magnet to the center of the back of the cap which will contact the end of the threaded axle spindle. The magnets I used are Neodymium which are the strongest and most permanent magnets known to man. The ones in the following pics have 22.45 lbs. of pull. They hold the cap snugly against the rim with a good snap. The first one I did snapped on nice and snug. The second cap needed a bit of forming ( physically bending the cap) to get it to fit the footprint on the wheel nicely. You can do all four caps for under $30 including shipping. If anyone wants to try this mod, PM me for a bit further instruction and what and where to get the magnets.

padrooRoger, I haven't removed my center caps yet but I heard all the comotion about them. I was thinking about magnets also. My wife likes the spinner mod, do you think they will work with the extra weight? I hate to ruin perfectly good center caps to do the spinner mod.
ed monahanI don't think any of the spinners attach to the center cap itself but I could be wrong.
Mine have a hole cut thru the cap. The spinner attaches to the hub, through the hole.
The front and rear are slightly different.

Dale, the spinner mod I did does not attach to the cap. A hole is cut in the cap and the spinner tower passes through. On my mod, the tower attaches to the wheel, not the hub. Any spinner mod either modifies the cap or does away with it completely. I'm pretty sure, once you install spinners, you will not go back to just plaun caps JMO. If you want to retain the original caps, you should go with spinners that don't utilize caps but these are expensive I beleive.

fibertopHere is an update. They just came out with a new magnet that should work on this mod. It has 38.13 pounds of pull strenght compared to 22.45 lbs. This is awesome pull. If you have 1/4" of space, I would go with this one. It's a little more dough. If you accidentally get 2 together without a separation disk, they are almost impossible to get apart!

Jim Cfibertop, Just a question I know our runflat sensors are part of the valve stem assembly. Read some where that to reset the assembly after the tire is replaced or fixed it required a tool which was a magnetic ring that was set over the valve stem it's self. So I wander if the powerful magnets you have mentioned would some how affect these assemblies? Again just a question...
StingRayJim, I had new sensors recalibrated once when I put the new wheels, tires and sensors on long ago. It was like a baseball bat wieght looking donut that was just slid over the valve stem at each of the 4 wheels. I don;t think that Fiber's center cap solution would impact this in the least. Again, JMO from observation of the reset procedure.
ed monahanThe link above says the magnets are $ 15.60 EACH !!!
fibertopYes, that's for the 1/4". These are more powerful than the ones I used. Still a good price!!!

I haven't done any testing on that. I suppose it is possible but the magnet would be about 8 to 10 inches away from the stem. And the magnetic field on these magnets is axial, meaning it is emitted from the ends ( flat surface) of the magnet, not the sides. Pull strength would be towards the axle stub or out and away from the wheel. Good point though. thanks!

Don't get too close to any Smart cars though. They will get stuck to your wheels like zebra mussles and throw you wheels out of balance.

drbuttonThe Smart Car problem is a misnomer, however as they are 100% non-metallic.
