binster | Hello all.. Looking for experience + guidance on my little cosmetic problem on my 99..The control arms have had their beating on rocks and I suspect poor maint by prior owners. I believe these are back when they were painted with a clear coat applied? What is the best way to refinish the control arms? Repaint? Powder coat? Should they be removed? Has anybody redone theirs in black?

ed monahan | Dave Mills had a problem but I am not sure if it was the same as yours. Do a search with Dave Mills name and it should show up. Or maybe Dave will see it and let you know. |

I think it is a problem with the clear seperating from the aluminum along the seam. You could have them polished, chromed, painted or powdercoated. I don't think it has to do with neglect, this is not the 1st one I've seen like that. |
Dave Mills | My A-arms had oxidized from road salt. I apparently got the car out too early one year. I had them glassblasted and redone. I did not powder coat them thinking that I will have to do it again if they oxidize again. |
binster | Thanks Dave.. Did you pull them off for the work? |
Dave Mills | Yes, we took the front end completely apart. I sent the kat to a local hot rod shop to have it done. |
binster | Great, thanks.. I'll look around in my area for someone to do the work.. |
micky milne | Hi Mate" get them aff and chrome them its the best.Got a great job done thru PIDDLER NO 1.. |
catfish | to prevent this in the future after repainting, wait at least 30 days and then use 3m paint protection film on all the edges-4-and it will last a long tims. ------------------

jjprowler | I got the ss covers for mine. Installeds in a hour done looks great. |
binster | SS Covers? Not sure I have seen those.. Anyone have a pic? |
pumpkin | Same here. Picture please, thank you. |
ed monahan | Second page of this thread contains some pics of the snap on stainless covers. Note the curve, it is not all the way out to the original parts, changing the look somewhat. http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum9/HTML/002299.html |
ed monahan | This thread has all four types pictured, by Butchcee. You can look and do a comparison. http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum9/HTML/002305.html |
Paul B | In my opinion, have them taken off and send them to Gary @ Prowler Products and have them chromed, it looks fantastic and makes a giant difference in how the car looks. Its a bit more costly, but one of the best mods Ive seen. |
pumpkin | I agree Paul. |
binster | JMHO.. But chrome looks good with chrome wheels.. I think I'll go with paint to match my silver wheels. |
binster | Does anyone have the paint code for the control arms? |
catfish | binster, there is no paint code for the control arms.a good painter should be able to match the original color. ------------------

quincy | binster, If you are short of cash and want to experiment a little I have an idea. Take some 'OO' steel wool and polish the damaged areas. Go to the hardware store and buy a pint of aluminum paint. The kind used to paint oil tanks and propane tanks. Take a small artist brush and touch up the damaged areas. It may not be perfect, but from 2-3 feet away you may not see the mis-match, if any. Just a thought! |
