The program was originally created to honor WWII vets but apparently they have expanded it to cover Korean and Vietnam vets.... Did you apply for this? Here's a short video that gives a good overview of the program... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VoWKh_T6aA Honor Flight also has a website that tells how organizations can conduct fundraisers to sponsor a flight at no cost to the veteran....I'm proud to say that my church; Bible Baptist Church of Wilmington, Ohio sponsored and PAID FOR an ENTIRE round trip flight several years ago.....It was our honor and privilege to do so.... If you are selected you get to fly FREE to Washington D C to visit the Memorials. Every veteran must be accompanied by a guardian, who has to pay for his/her ticket.
It is a one day trip, starting about 5 A M and ending at Midnight.
I just got notified that I will be going in October. I am pretty excited about it. Everyone who has gone says it is
really a great experience.
Are any of you familiar with it? jimsutton You will like it Ed. They have from Florida all so .. TucsonJer They do it in Arizona as well. Congratulations Ed, what an honor it must be. Please let us know how your experience turns out. Jer bjprowler Ed....Are you going as an "honoree" or as a "guardian of an honoree?" Simonsez They offer this honor flight several times a year out of Evansville. Really nice. Congratulations Ed. katmat They usually do it twice a year out of Midway Airport in Chicago. SWA is a supporter. A lot of local people come out & show their thanks to the Vets. Would have loved to be able to take my dad on this when he was alive. bjprowler FYI....
The "Honor Flight" network was founded on 2005 by Earl Morse, a physician assistant and retired Air Force captain.
Morse worked in a Department of Veterans Affairs clinic in Springfield, Ohio which is located in Southwestern Ohio between Columbus and Dayton, Ohio....
Here's how your group can get involved:ed monahan I attempted to sign up as a guardian several years ago but was too old. I THINK the cut off is 65 but it might be 70, I don't recall how long ago I checked into it.
I am going as an honoree and yes, you have to apply. I applied a couple of years ago and was told I was too "young", as they were taking older veterans first. I completely agree with that policy.
I think they have 6 flights a year out of Cincy. In Oct. the flight is for retired law enforcement veterans ONLY. I don't know if it is filled. I got the paper work Sat. and had to take it to my Dr. to get his okay, as do all honorees. bjprowler Don't forget to take LOTS of pictures to post here on the POA! Enjoy your trip! garysss Great Honor Ed!! Thanks for your service. Enjoy a great experience. bjprowler Here's a heartwarming video taken during a Honor Flight when the WWII vets got "mail call" while en route to see their memorials.....
