TucsonJerTook the Prowler to the dealership today to get a fresh oil change before taking off to Tennessee. I had waited for over an hour when the service manager came in to tell me the drain plug was stripped and they were going to their sister dealership and get a kit to fix the problem. They called a Uber ride for me to take me home and said when it was fixed they would come and get me. I was pleased that they totally owned what had happened and was going to fix it at no expense to me. When I looked at the bolt I was surprised that there wasn’t a crush washer under the bolt head like my Goldwing has. On the Goldwing, after a couple oil changes you replace the washer with a new one so as to not over tighten the bolt and strip it. I wonder if the aluminum crush washer could be the fix to eliminate stripping out the drain plugs. Anyway kudos to Larry H Miller Chrysler Jeep here in Tucson for their honesty and integrity. Jer
bjprowlerStripped oil pan plugs on the 3.5 litre V6 is a COMMON PROBLEM....

The oil pan is made of CAST ALUMINUM and the oil pan plug is made of STEEL…..

Combine that with a MINIMUM WAGE grease rack monkey who is using an 18 inch long, 1/2 inch drive BREAKER BAR to loosen and tighten plugs...

Get the picture?

The SAME THING happened to me and I made them REPLACE THE OIL PAN....GRRRRR (Chances are, you're going to get an oversized, SELF TAPPING drain plug made somewhere in Hong Kong)

BTW....The torque setting for the Prowler oil pan drain plug is 20 ft-pounds….Good oil change places use a torque wrench and actually CHECK the specs to prevent what happened to you.

TucsonJerBJP, They told me when they torqued it down it kept on turning so apparently they were using a torque wrench. This is the only place I’ve ever taken it but like you say... you never know. They just called and said it was done. Jer

In order to prevent stripping of the pan I replaced the plug with one of these, worked great.

bjprowlerask them if they replaced the pan or installed an oversized, self tapping plug...And will they will give you a written guarantee that the plug will NEVER leak?

Yeah, that's gonna happen.

TucsonJerWe’ll i know they didn’t put in a new oil pan. It was the bigger plug. I’m pretty sure if I have a problem they’ll step up and fix it. They didn’t charge me anything today. They have a good reputation here in town.
Landscape DoctorSounds like they tapped it next size up,,,should be ok. That is a common problem at dealers and oil change shops. They have the greenies do the oil changes and they crank em to tight and the aluminum strips out.
MDProwlerI installed a Fram drain adapter years ago and never have to take it out of the pan. Just take off the cap, screw on the hose a drain away.

I have seen them out there for a while now but never purchased one.

TLRandallAt least they did not do what my Dealer did years ago to the Purple. He forgot to add the oil and started the car!
After letting it idle for a few seconds he realized what he did and shut it down. I got the General Manager, who had them fill it, drive it for 20 miles, then drain it again through a fine filter to look for any particulates. Did that one more time, and after finding none, they made a notation to the vehicle record and signed a copy stating that they would take responsibility for any future engine damage.
MDProwlerThis one is wat I use.
