DanoIt is that time. The factory speakers are shot. They rattle and drive me bonkers! I want to replace all of them including the subwoofer.

I've looked through the board and have come up with several speakers that were highly recommended...only to find that they are discontinued! Nooooooo!

Has anyone recently replaced their speakers that would highly recommend them ?

If yes, would you care to share what models you purchased and any special circumstances involving your installation ?

Did you use the stock amp ?

Thanks in advance, I have a feeling that this is not going to be easy.

Richnew41It will be easier then you think... With my stereo upgrade I purchased many extra sets of speakers... I have a brand new pair of Awesome Infinity's I'm willing to give to you for zero dollars and zero cents... As long as you take care of shipping... Let me know if your interested...
Thanks
Rich

CAT-A-TONICFirst off, repairing the factory speakers is easy.

You'll need 2 ohm speakers if your going to replace factory.
Infinite and JBL have 2 ohm but are two way config.
Couldn't find exact 2 ohm replacement woofers like factory.

I am referring to the door speakers. But if the others have a torn up foam ring they can easily be fixed as well. Not sure about direct replacements for the others.

bcsnaveHere we go again...
garysssI would like to give a big Thank You to Richnew 41 for hooking me up with some great speakers for the Prowler. Great people here on POA helping each other out and Rich is one of them. Look forward to meeting him in person and buying lunch or dinner and maybe a Until then, I'm sending him a little care package.
robinRight on Gary.
Rich has been Fantasic to the prowler community.
Always researching for replacement parts.
DanoOH MY GOSH! i just finished replacing all the speakers (and a BIG BIG thank you to Rich for speakers AND for the recipe for success. He was dead on with speaker recommendations.

I was very disappointed with the stock audio in the Prowler. I replaced the stock receiver with a Pioneer single DIN AVH-X7800BT. While this is a really nice receiver, if the screen was activated and the car was in park, it would hit the shifter knob. The final nail in the coffin was that the screen covered most of the AC vents. That one went back.

I looked long and hard for the features I wanted in a single DIN receiver and nothing. So I ordered a Sony XAV-AX100 and dove in head first with chopping things up to make it fit (not to worry, I purchased a new bezel just in case if I want to take it back to stock).

The system sounded better...but still like crap. I started the search for new speakers and Richnew chimed in with some stellar advice (and a set of speakers - thanks Rich!).

I just got finished with the installation of the speakers and holy cow. It sounds soooo much better. It is hard for me to believe the difference (in all fairness, 2 of the stock speakers had NO foram speaker surround).

Parts List:
4 x Infinity Reference REF-3022cfx
1 x Kicker 40CWRT672 6.75" sub was what was supposed to be installed, but a 43CWRT672 was installed. Supposedly same specs, just newer model.
2 x Infinity Kappa 62.9i speakers for the doors.

Landscape Doctor
DanoPics of...speakers installed ? Ummm...really? Is that what you want ? They look like...well...speakers!

If you really want pics, let me know and I will get some.

Landscape DoctorCurious what the receiver looks like installed, you did have to make modifications to make it fit correct???. Did you make any modifications to the speaker areas or were those direct fits?
DanoHere is a picture of the dash speakers:

The rear speakers:

The backup camera:

The installed (IMCOMPLETE) radio:

All unfinished work, especially the radio install. I still need to smooth in the sides where you can see that additional plastic was added. When all is done and perfect I am going to paint it the same color of the car, Prowler Yellow.

The backup camera was a real pain, but it is soooo worth it. This was one of the first mods I made to the car and of course it was the hardest. I hat to drill a hole in the bumper to run the power/video cable. I must have fought myself for hours on how to run the cable without making a hole. The hole won, and it looks factory - you cannot even see the cable.

mslc10was the Kicker sub a direct bolt in ( no modification) to the factory enclosure ? how does it sound compared to stock sub?
DanoThe Kicker sub was not even close to a bolt in. I cut a 1/4 inch plywood round disc and fastened it to the bottom of the woofer. Put the woofer aside. Then took a heat gun and heated the plastic speaker box inside where the bottom of the woofer would touch and outside the box, but in the same place (alternating often inside the box and outside the box). When it started getting soft I would press the woofer into place and let it cool. I did this a second round where it would press in all the way. I then removed the plywood disc and bolted in the woofer permanently. The plywood disc was to give additional clearance to the bottom of the woofer so it did not touch the plastic when it was bolted in (and creating vibrations).

BUT...the second round of heating I got one spot too soft and it started to droop. Badly. If you have ever heated plastic it does not cool like solder - it takes a while for it to become hard again (kinda like getting old!!!). I saw this happening and after I bolted in the sub, I laid it on top of a piece of wood to press the droop back in and let it cool. And it shows...it really looks bad.

BUT it is functional and I will leave that repair for another day. I might 3D print a round cup type add-on for the the back of the box so that I can cut out a hole and glue this printed add-on to the back of the box.

The flange on the front side of the woofer was the same thickness as the factory flange that was fastened to the speaker box. I removed the factory flange from the box with a putty knife. I then took some self-stick foam that came with another set of speakers and stuck it on top of the woofer flange so that it makes an airtight when it is bolted back together.

Now to address the sound. Yes, it does sound way better. A lot more bass in my opinion. Does it sound like my F150? No, not even close...but Ford did a great job with their newer trucks, and they have some decent bass for a stock truck.

In a nutshell ? Yes, it was WELL worth the upgrade and the only thing that I would change if I had to do it again is to heat the plastic slower and check more often.

Thanks to Richnew for his recommendation of this woofer. It was spot on. He's got something like a zillion subwoofers stuffed in his Prowler somehow so I trusted his judgement with audio and glad I did.

Hope this helps.
