My wife was cleaning out the garage today and she rolled the original tires and wheels outside that came on my 1999 Prowler and the tires still look great just like a lot of my cars that sit and don't drive very often. My daily driver got new tires this summer, they were about six years old but they were all cracked and I didn't trust them anymore. I would rather wear a tire out than replace it because of age. |
| garysss | Me too Dale, I hate to throw a tire out due to age only. I just put 2 on my PT yesterday, one had slipped a belt and the other was cracking. I had replaced the other 2 about 3 years ago with 40000 miles and 14 years old. The 2 I just replaced were about 13 years old and 40000 miles. I have several cars with older tires, but many I only put about 500 miles a year.

| ALLEY CAT | Venturing >  Age & heat? I wonder about the multi-millions of radiator hoses, fan belts, and serpentine belts hanging in the auto parts stores and their huge, hot warehouses for 5 years//10 years//15 years or more just waiting for someone to need them? Because of age,,,,do they toss them into the dumpster and replace them with new, fresh inventory? The answer is NO........... Just saying.. Any thoughts? | RPL | Alley Cat. Yes, this is a cause for concern. If you lose a hose or a belt it may cause hard steering. If you lose a tire at a critical point it can put you at risk. If you purchased hoses from me, you received some suggested storage instruction to help extend the shelf life of this recent manufactured hoses. The better tire stores are now careful about the age of tires that they are selling. Many top stores will not work on tires over ten years old. I've had that happen to me and I'm a very good customer there. Awareness is the key. I have the wheels and tires off each car annually to clean everything at look closely at the tire beads and at the bottoms of the tread blocks for signs of cracking. I spend some time on each tire before reinstalling it. No I can't inspect inside the tires but I do the best that I can. At the same time I inspect the hoses and belts plus the weather striping. I found a product from Germany that helps protect the rubber parts. We're still driving the original run flats. We don't typically do spirited driving. When that was tried at Tail of the Dragon, it was obvious that the tires weren't what they once were and we slowed down before we got into trouble. I don't want to tell anyone what to do. | ALLEY CAT | Bob,,,, I wasn't directing my post towards anything you said about tires,,,I agree with you about them to a large degree. I was just throwing out a question about belts and hoses at auto parts stores and warehouses,,since I spent 10 years working at them and seen those items 'hanging around' for decades and not being sold. My point was directed at > 'nobody gives those items a second thought when they need to purchase them'. I've never heard a customer ask 'how old are these new belts or hoses?' when buying for their immediate need. I'm just questioning how 'age and heat' may, or may not, effect these rubber items as well?  I'm sure you seen that same thing while working at AMC parts, while living in Colorado..... Since we were on the subject of rubber tires, I just thought I'd throw that thought out for discussion.. |

The car now starts and it instantly goes to max RPM's.
The OBDII shows no ECU faults nor diagnostic codes.
I have been to several repair shops but no one wants to touch it. Any suggestions?

I would look at the TPS (throttle position sensor).
Just a guess.

| Tony Goertz | Throttle plate is manual so expect that something is opening it up to allow more air. TPS will then send more fuel. Also check vacuum lines etc to cruise control module .

| MDProwler | The biggest difference between tires and under the hood components is UV. UV rays will age the rubber more then age alone. Eagle runflat original tires may not be cracked but are so hard that you won't get any decent traction. My Koumos are over 5 years old and although they still have plenty of tread ( ok, the front ones do ) they don't have the grip they used to. I have had the back end start to come around on some not so aggressive curves so time for a change. Just wish I could get the same tire. |
