| ed monahan | I put a 3 inch wide putty knife under the edge of the black plastic cap and pop it off. Putting it back on is
a slight adventure also. Not a lot of room to work with. |

| PROWLAW | i'm ashamed to admit that I don't own a putty knife...i've tried to pull it off but it's hard to get a grip on it. Anything else I might use? |

| ed monahan | Long screw driver but don't twist (rotate) the screw driver. Maybe two old credit cards together would be stiff enough. |
| alrtg | The first time I pulled the caps off, I broke one. After looking closer at the cap I determined that I may have had a better chance of not breaking it if I pried up at the head or tail side of the cap. The plastic that flexes to hold the cap on has slots in it on two sides and my thought is that if prying is aligned with the splits, there may be a lesser chance of breaking them.
From what I have seen, the slots line up with the head and tail of the Kat logo on the cap. I hope this helps. |
| PROWLAW | Wow what a difference it made. The car's steering esp when parking has been "sticky" for years already and I never knew why. Now the steering has a lot less effort, and the steering wheel rebounds much better after I turn. Anybody have an opinion as to whether or not the ball joints might be damaged from not being properly lubricated? |

Yes, it happened to mine.....they did not explode but they got overfilled and it now makes a mess from time to time.

| catfish | andria,if youre getting a mess of grease around the boot,you may have split it and didnt realize it.if the boot stays clean,no grease around it its ok.sometimeswhen it has to much grease in it ,it may pop in the next couple days,and will start leaking all over.if thats the case,remove wheel and clean w/a solvent,get rid of all excess grease,find the spilt and clean real well and put some 100 percnet silicone on the split and it will stop the leak.next time you grease it give it just a little.i overgreased one of my frts and used the mentioned process to fix it.holding up very good.to avoid removing wheels to grease the 4 fittings,get a tip for the grease gun that has the grease fitting exit on the side instead of the tip.dont overgrease cause it will split the boot.just enough to expand the boot a little.you dont want to blow it up like a balloon,cause it will burst the boot.ive never tried this,may or may not work.to much grease,push ball on fitting down and squezze boot,may or may not release some grease and pressure off boot,its worth a try. ------------------

| ed monahan | I have two different grease gun tips that Catfish described. Make sure you get a good one. One of mine works great, the other one is terrible. I misplaced one and that is why I have two. |
| Tomcal | ED, I have one of these side grease gun fittings which doesn't work very well. What brand did you use that worked? |
| ed monahan | I have two grease guns here at the garage at home, not the side cut-out one, however. I have no idea what brand or where I bought it but I will attempt to find it and see if it is marked. It probably is in a bag or box somewhere and I will need to go buy a third one when I decide to grease the car. That is usually how it works out for me.

| lionberger | I just looked at mine but my grease guns are both straight and wouldn't go on (not enough room). I used a putty knife to remove the cap and a short piece of wood and a rubber hammer to reinstall. I never realized that there were any zerk fittings on the Prowler. Anyone know of any others? ------------------

| RPL | There are also two on the rear lower control arms. They have the same covers as the front. Be careful not to over lubricate them and damage the boot. |

| RPL | and that's why this site is so important to all Prowler owners. Owners get more help here than anywhere else. It helps protect their investment. I sometimes do a search on how to do something. The site helps and there is more experience available that the shop manual. |
