SirRealI took my Kat to have his emissions done today. I was waiting in line about three cars back and a lady came up and tapped on my window and told me to get out of the line and go to their office. Of course I said huh and why. She said I was getting a waiver because they didn't want to take a chance on messing something up. So I went into the office got the waiver and they didn't even charge me the $14 fee. God I Love Prowlers
Prowler RunThat's great! Where I live (Illinois) there are no waivers like that. They accepted my 2000 Prowler last summer without hesitation. It passed.
BeWareHere in GA they just plug into something under the dash and that gives them all the data they need. They don't even look under the hood. The only other thing they check is the fuel filler neck.
SirRealPR I didn't know we had such a thing either. The funny thing is they did it last year and like Rich said they just plugged into the module under the dash and I was on my way. I guess it is just up to whomever is in charge on a given day. But it was still cool except for the jeers from the folks that had to back up to let me out
Bob MillerAre you sure it was the Kat or the fact you didn't bath?
Dave MillsMy kat has a waiver here in PA also, but it is because I drive it less than 5000 miles a year.

Jeff, Is that why you wanted to know if Jimmy had a hose available?

SirRealI feel a water-balloon battle a-brewin'
ed monahanThey asked me if mine was a front wheel drive !!!!
They have since quit testing in OH. It was only selected counties when they were testing.
prowlrmanThe plug at the bottom of the dash is the OBD (On Board Diagnostics) access plug. If there are any engine or emission related faults they are stored in the computer, even if it may not have turned on the "check engine" light, or if it did and then went off after the next key start.

As long as no faults are stored, it is considered to have passed emissions, because OBD measuring blocks are so sensitive any emission levels out of the specified ranges are registered. That is why they did not sniff the tailpipe exhaust and gave you a "pass"

They pressure test the fuel cap to be certain it holds specified pressure, as the fuel systems do run under pressure as designed to meet fuel vapor recirculation / recovery standards. It has to meet specs or they will make you purchase a new cap to also receive a "pass" approval.

MDProwlerThey passed my thru the same way last year. Here in Maryland we still have the dyno rollers in each testing bay. There is no bay without them. They are afraid of damaging the underside as it sits so low. I wondered why they just didn't have us back in from the exit end. But I didn't wonder out loud.
bowtonAs a point of interest, here in Southeastern Washington, there is no emission testing required on any car or truck. Kind of strange for this day and age.

007Here is SC we also dont have any testing. I hope that it stays this way but I am sure that it will change in time.
galaxieIn Ohio, I'm told, you have to get the emissions checked. I just got a notice last week. I'm also afraid of damage to the kat, so I got collectors plates for it. You don't have to get an E-check with collector plates. They also come in a vanity plate. I got MACS KAT on it. The only downside is you have to renew them each year.
stevedymoJust got mine inspected at a private station in NJ. When he plugged in the OBD he didn't get any data. Asked me if the battery was dead or changed out. I knew the battery went low over the winter but the car started up OK.
Put in a new OPTIMA and went back after running the car to register some data. Car passed.

Warning: A low battery may start the car but it can also clear the codes. Even if charging OK, the older batteries may not hold the charge over time. Look for the green ball in the clear glass on top of the orig. battery. This could lead to a snowball effect of problems.

Low Battery - Clears Codes - Goes into Limp Mode - you think it's the sensors when all along it's the battery or even a bad Alternator.
