rhwd2003Hey guys,
First time to post on the board, I was curious to get the lowdown on the prowler. I am looking for something exotic such as this car, there is not another one in town. I live in Bowling Green, KY home of the Corvette, and there are just too many in town. So I want to go out with something exotic, I am guessing they stopped building this car in 2002? Are there any drawbacks to getting a 1999 or 2000? Any known issues, or anything I should look for when purchasing one? I see they run about $30k is this what everybody else is finding out? Sorry if these have been answered before, just looking for a nice weekend car.
halicathey Rich,

just go to the home page and click on The Prowler Story at the left side of the page... it gives the whole story.

I'm not to technical so there are others that know the mechanics side of the car.... they are all very willing to help a rookie and are a first class bunch...they really helped me decide to go with the Kat when i was in the process of looking....

good luck

jim

rhwd2003Thanks for the reply. I have previously owned a 2004 Nissan 350Z, really liked the car and sold it to buy a house about 6 months ago. Now I am back on the prowl for something and had my eye on a prowler online but I let it slip away. But I thought I would check with this wonderful forum and see what I should be careful for when looking at the prowler's online and if I travel to a dealership??

Thanks a ton guys!

DandersonLots of good info at http://www.prowleronline.com/story.php

Here are some key changes:

1997 - All of these were Purple with Silver wheels. The engine was the 3.5 liter V6 cast iron engine rated at 214 HP.

The 1999 model 3.5 liter 24 valve V6 that produces 253 HP.

September 1998 - Chrome wheels are introduced into production.

May 1999
The Prowler exhaust manifold on the 3.5 liter engine is changed to the LH (Intrepid, Concorde, 300M) design. A rear license plate stabilizer (two rubber mounts) is added to production to eliminate the bounce in license plate. The stabilizer mounting hole is 5mm.

2000 model year - There are a few key model year changes to the Prowler. The suspension shocks & springs are changed to a new design for smoother ride. Low friction ball joints were added to the upper lateral links on the rear suspension. The run flat tires (20" rear and 17" front) are redesigned with a softer side wall for smoother ride and new recommended tire pressure of 28 psi for all four tires. A new auto dimming rear view mirror with mini trip odometer and temperature gauge is introduced. A new radio with speed sensitive volume control to automatically increase or decrease the audio level with change in speed. The bumpers are repainted from Gray to Black. The alternator is changed to a new design with declutching pulley to eliminate the serpentine drive belt rattle that occurs as the belt tension decays (relaxes) as the 3.5L does not have an automatic belt tensioner. Chrome wheels are now standard

There is a change in manufacturer of the shocks made for the Prowler. The Koni (grey) shocks are replaced with Dynamic Suspension (black) shocks. The new shocks went into production at the start of the 2001 model year. There were some late 2000 models that also received the new shocks when the Koni supply ran out. The new Dynamic Suspension shocks are painted black including the spring retainers. The old Koni shocks were painted gray with aluminum spring retainers.

2001 - The Plymouth Brand Prowler ends production. The Prowler production continues under the Chrysler brand name. (Thus, 2001 had both Plymouth and Chrysler Prowlers.)

2002 - Last year for the manufacturing of Prowlers.

I hope this helps.

-Dan

Edit: Bah, curse my slow typing and the speediness of the POA.

rhwd2003Danderson thanks for quick response also. What about pricing, what should I be looking for from a dealer? Or is there a good place to find these cars other then ebay?

I've seen the pricing range from the 20s for a high mileage Prowler to 6-figures for a "historically significant" Prowler. Normally, I've seen em go for 30-50k though. A lot depends on mileage, if it's still under warranty, mods that have been done to it, color, etc. I'm sure other folks here probably know more about pricing than me though.

BeWareIf you find a Prowler without Koni's check the shocks for leakage. This is a common problem with the Dynamic Suspension shocks. Also check that the hood shocks support the hood. These ar also prone to failure. Not expensive to replace (about $28 if you do it yourself, easy to do) but maybe you could use it as bargaining chip.
rhwd2003Ok so look at the shocks and if they are grey then I need to check for leakage?

No Koni shocks are grey and clearly Marked Koni on the spring retainers. (GOOD)

You want to watch a black shock Dynamic suspension with a plain aluminum spring retainer (BAD)

toysLook for front nose Bottom Scrape, Bad peeling or blistering chrome wheels on the inside, Hood gas Shocks, these are the most common flaws.

Do your homework and you will be OK

rhwd2003Thanks for that response Toys, any other place you recommend to look for these cars other then ebay?
halicatour classified ads are a great place to start... CJ can get you a list of cars available that are brand new at the dealers... e-bay can be a little dicey sometimes.. it all depends what you want... there is a sweet Black tie in our classified section right now.
dreamcast18try www.autotrader.com
I bought SkanKat's Orange off autotrader.
there's also 2 black ties on ebay right now.

rhwd2003ok thanks, are the black ties worth alot more $$?
toysBlack tie for sale in Prowler classifieds right now, a real clean car with extras, nice car.

Toys

halicatthere were only 163 black ties made for public sale..
quite rare....
they are my favorite, (i own a solid black Kat myself...)
the black ties seem to get a few more bucks...i think there have been a few around that were either originaly all silver or all black then painted two tone.

good luck

CJYes, I can help you locate any of the new unsold Prowlers.

CJ - The One and Only
1999 Black - PPROWLR 2002 Deep Candy Red - CJPROWLN

Classic/Beautiful - I'm referring to the Cat of course!

TooHipCatrhwd2003,
If you would like to spend the extra cake to get a brand spanking new one from the dealer...I would take CJ up on her offer. The advantage of a dealer is that you can purchase a warranty while you are at it in addition to ultra low miles and virtually a brand new Prowler!
If you go private sale as I did, I also reccomend Autotrader. This link should bring you right to about 5 pages of Cats. Remember...they show you the highest priced, lowest miles cats first. (You may have to copy and paste the entire link)

Good luck on purchasing your Cat. Any questions...I guess the POA is like...

"They'll keep the lights on for ya". I mean there is someone always at home.
Brian

CJYour best bets are to check the classified ad section on this website for used, Autotrader....maybe eBay......and I can help you with the location of any remaining new, untitled Prowlers across the country.

Good luck with your search........you won't find a car as much fun as this one!

IncaBobHi: This is my first post. Just bought a 2002 Inca with 8K miles last weekend. Thought about a new one, but found a very clean example still under original 3/36 warranty. I thought about a new one, but after looking at the additional cost, decided that a good clean used one was a better deal.
IncaBobPS to my previous post. I have studied these cars for about a year, and everything the folks have told you above about them is exactly correct. Good luck on your search.
halicatthere is a nice Black Kat in our classified right now... a few miles but priced right.. worth a look..
