Kevin AWell, I hope to have my new Black (the fastest I am told!) Kat next week. My current insurance provider is Liberty Mutual, and they will not even discuss covering a Prowler. I will need to use someone like Grundy. Has anyone had good or bad experience with them? Coverage is $400 a year and is very reasonable. I am a little worried about their limits of use clause (club events, rallies, parades, and events of public interest...) Anyway, your feedback is appreciated as this is a final piece of the puzzle.
Kevin
c.mangengChange insurance companies if they can't provide for your needs. I have allstate, which has been the cheepest for me over many years and I compare other company rates every couple years. Do some insurance shopping this xmas, good luck.
Dead End DonI do not have any first-hand experience, but I have heard from those that have that there are lots of specialty insurance companies that specialize in collector cars, exotics, etc., and they do have very good rates.

HOWEVER, their policies typically do not cover daily use of the car for transportation, or they have very stringent mileage limitations on "everyday" use. These policies are typically for a stated replacement value, and are not usually suitable for a street-driven daily driver. They also often do not offer the limits of liability that a regular commercial insurer does, because they aren't intending to cover a daily driver. If your car is financed, or if you have assets, you need to look at the liability limits carefully to be sure you are comfortable with the protection you have, and that you aren't in breach of your loan agreement, etc.

Be very careful reading the fine print so that you are sure you know what uses are and are not covered, because when you make that claim, they will try their hardest to claim it came within some exception to their coverage.

CTProwlerI have Progressive Insurance My 2001 is $936 and my 2002 is $956! Thats for 12 months coverage for myself and wife. Since i drop collision 4 months of the year (Winter- garaged) it works out to about $634.

------------------

pumpkinWe pay $474 a year with Progressive on the prowler. On our most expensive car the Mercedes SL500ae is only $458 a year with progressive. Age does help. I guess getting married to a older spouse does help too
Our deductable is $1000 which makes the price come down, but when you have 8 cars to insure does make a big difference . Look around you will come out with a good deal, check with USAA if you were military good deal there.

"I may have to grow older, but I do not have to grow up!"

JRLGrundy is the best.
Had a theft by deception this year, they paid exactly in 30 days, no hassle whatsoever.
I've had a few problems over the years and they're first rate!
If it's classified as a collector you better not have a loss while going to the store (shopping, etc.) as you won't be covered.

indy96I've had Grundy for my Road Runner for about 15 years. If you have a collectible there are restrictions, but they also cover cars like the Prowler (are there any other?) for "everyday" use at a slightly higher rate. I don't have them for the Prowler since Proformance covered it with no problem as part of my normal policy and only wants $18.00 more than the 300M (collision expense is higher according to them...I can go with that).
lavkaI have USAA on the Prowler covered for daily driving. I pay about $500 yr. I have been with USAA for about 14 years. They have quick claim service. If you can get in with USAA I think you can't find a better insurance company.
Typically you have to be a commissioned officer in the military, or have a family member who is.

USAA sublets their collector car insurance to "American Collectors." I have their insurance on my '74 Vette with a 2500 mile annual limit for about $400. I can't use the car for a daily driver but if it gets stolen or wrecked the payout is $25K. You can get a policy with a higher payout but you have to submit the car for appraisal.

Shop around for a better deal. They are out there.

Teri9672we tried to get Grundy's insurance for our 1997 Camaro SS LT4 car. We do not plan on driving the car it only has 67 miles on her. They turned us down for coverage because my husbands daily driver was older than the car we were trying to insure. (he drives his 88 Z vert for a daily driver, but it's been completely converted to an LS1 2000 model)

It's good insurance, but be careful if you plan on driving it other than to carshows or events.

Kevin AThanks to all who posted their insurance experience. I looked around and found an alternative with Allstate. The '99 is actually a few bucks cheaper than my '02 Sebring LTD Conv. Big advantage is clearly I can enjoy the Kat without worrying if I am using it in a manner that is covered (running errands etc.)

So after months of lurking as a non-owner, I hope to grow to the ranks as Prowler owner this week. I must say a BIG reason I have stayed so enthusiastic about the Prowler is this site. I love the community and spirit and the good natured ribbing and fun between the owners/members. I look forward to going to my first event.

Now the next problem... what should my license plate say?

ed monahanAre you sure 99PRWLR is still available in OH?
Kevin AEd,
It still shows that it is available on the Oplates web site. Other combinations I tried came back as unavailable, so I assume this one is up for grabs. You going to take it? :-)

catfishmy call to grundy, about a year ago, they said if not pure pleasure, forget it.which meant,if driving to the store acccident happens, not covered.wouldnt have allstate for free.one of the absolute worst.usaa-good,but must be military.21st,century,great.one of the best things about 21st.is they wont put a/m or used parts on your car.almost all will.read your policy closely, you will be surprised.as far as allstate goes, have an accident, and you will find out,how bad they are.from body shop experience, they fix a car that should have been a total, because they are to cheap to replace it.sorry you bought it.have seen them put a/m parts on a 2003 denali.seriously.also allied and nationwide.alot of companies had a general rule,no a/m or used till car was 2 yrs.old .that has changed, again ask lots of question, especially about if you have a wreck, how is your car going to be repaired.most wont tell you ,that your policy reads a/m.or used parts.on a prowler you dont have to worry, about a/m.to my knowledge nobody makes any.there are used out there available.

ed monahanKevin, if you buy collector's plates they are a little higher priced but you do not have to go thru e-check. It is worth it to me not to put my car in their hands, after seeing them botch it the first time. I realize you might not have e-check in your county but we have it here. What a joke.
I have "RQUTE 66" for a plate and the Q looks like an O. I won't be switching.
bruce hazeltonTry Haggerty. I've got 2 old cars with them for stated value for under $250 a year. As soon as my son has 5 years driving experience they will take the Prowler as they class it as an exotic

idiveEd - what is e-check?
Kevin AThanks Ed. No E-Check here in the Capital City! (Franklin County). Good info on the collector plates too. Did not know that.

Jan, thanks for the input on Allstate. I'll question them carefully before I sign the policy.

Bruce, I called Haggerty and they would not write the Prowler because they said the type of policy (exotic?) needed at least a $40k stated value. Also the age ('99) had something to do with it too. I think they did not like my one single speeding ticket either.

In the end I did not feel comfortable with Grundy and pleasure use only stipulation. Even if Allstate is a dog (I can switch later) at least I am not restricted on use like with Grundy. I'll have more fun using the Kat knowing that.

catfishtry 21st.century,they are also one of the best.also am/fam is good also.

TntToyJan,

I have had Allstate for about 15 years and have not come across the problem you are stating. I recently let my niece borrow my car and she lost it and hit a curb which cracked both wheels, chipped my front fender and cracked the frame at the front weld right above the shock mount. they replaced the wheels with NEW ones and fixed the frame and I am very happy with them as I have always been.

The only problem I ever had was when my hardtop for my 66 230 SL was stolen and they could not find a new replacement. I have to settle for a used one that did not fit right for the car as they were made per the vin, but other than that I have been very happy with there service.

In addition to that when I was not driving my SL I would not insure for a while and if I wanted to take it out for a spin my agent would write up a policy just in case I got in an accident. That is what I call good service.

ed monahanE-Check is the emission check. You need to get it every two years before you can get a license plate renewal. They have changed the rules a few times and now you do not need it on a brand new car. They couldn't get the computer to work the day I was there so the next year they told me I had to go back since I didn't pass the previous year and I would need to go the following year since I would be due again. That is when I switched plates. I think it costs $ 20 to go thru e-check and it takes hours, sometimes. Only counties that have a supposed smog problem have to do it. We are in a valley so we have "smog" a few days a year. I-75 is the busiest truck route in America and that contributes to the pollution, however they do not live here. A total ripoff.
idiveThanks Ed. We have extra emissions controls here as well, but they do that when doing the annual inspections. You just need proof of insurance to get that done. Then you also just need to show proof of insurance to get your tags (here). I guess that makes me lucky? We do have alot of traffic here, which correlates to adding to the pollution problem, but we got more polution coming out of the airports than from the ground traffic. They need to come down on the planes instead of the cars. Then there's all the chemical plants and refineries. They even lowered the speed limits for a while to "improve air quality" until a study proved that that was just a farce. Its all just another way for them to get more money out of you.
catfishall i can tell you about is az,and chicago area, they could operate differently in ca.30 years ago in chicago, most quality shops wouldnt even touch a allstate wreck.ive seen it many times here.

------------------

Wil C. KeenerJust to add some input we shopped around for insurance for my classic and prowler and ended up with GRUNDY.We also got agreed value on each car and is very affordable, example $50,000 agreed value is $625.00 a year on the prowler ,that's full covered no deductible,no mileage,(collector car coverage). The key is to insure for agreed value not value after a wreck,so make sure you ask a lot of questions before purchase of policy ! I had classic cars for twenty five years and was miss lead on policies and ended up on the short end .
