June 13, 2003 Officers on the bridge calculated that the Silver Bounty was 15 miles away and ramped up Radiance’s speed from 17 knots to 23 knots – its fastest speed. By the time the ship arrived about an hour later, the vessel, buffeting 40 knot winds and 12 ft. sea swells, was half submerged. And, indeed, as the last of the three fishermen were hoisted up by the armpits by a Royal Caribbean crew onto a rescue boat, the Silver Bounty went fully underneath the surface – save for part of the mast. The rescue was completed at about 6 a.m. The three fishermen, who were treated in the ship’s medical center and are in relatively good condition, according to a Royal Caribbean spokesman, are spending the day on Radiance as it sails through the Inside Passage. They’ll be transferred to a Canadian Coast Guard vessel later this afternoon. Radiance of the Seas is spending the summer sailing seven day Alaska Inside Passage itineraries out of its Vancouver home port. ------------------ Mother Nature will always have the upper hand and we can only hope we have a great cruise! ------------------ ------------------ I would be willing to bet that the kids would remember Alaska for it's ahh experience. Maybe not "the cruise in Alaska" but the seals, whales, and glaciers. Your kids are the right age to appreciate, enjoy, and remember the experience! Talk to Lynn or Ben on the activities for the kids on the ship and if it stops close to Sitka. You could even win $500.00 to help recoup from the trip.FL Phil This was in the press:
Our Ship saves the day for some fishermen.
Radiance Makes Heroic Rescue
Most passengers on Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas slept through a dramatic rescue effort early this morning. The ship, in the Inside Passage’s Hecate Strait on its way from Ketchikan to Vancouver, received a radio call at 4:55 a.m. from the Prince Rupert Coast Guard Station. Three fishermen on the 80 ft. “Silver Bounty” vessel had called in an SOS as the vessel was beginning to sink. CTProwler Sounds like Funnn!!!40 knot winds and 12' seas, just my kind of fun, freezing my butt off looking at ice!!!I'll fly in fish on Great bear lake and fly home!!! Rickster They had a vide6o clip of the rescue on ABC News last night. Looked like a dangerous rescue. FL Phil From what we heard the weather is much warmer in August then in June. CTProwler I'm only Kidding!!!I've heard from many people how great the Alaska Cruise Is.. FL Phil CTProwler hope you are considering joining us. What better way to cruise than with a group of people with the same interests and the fun of meeting new friends. CTProwler I am considering it Barb's got a relative in i think its called Sitka?
