Stray CatI am thinking about buying a trailer to tow the Prowler to some of the longer distance events. I would also want to haul my 67 Firebird to Pontiac events. I have a 2001 Dodge Caravan ES with the Tow package. I do not have the $$$ for an enclosed trailer and I do not believe the Van would handle it. are the cars "safe" for long distances on these open trailers ? Should I do it or just keep racking up the miles and drive ? Can anyone recommend a good quality open trailer that would be capable to haul either car ?

Thanks a bunch,

John

ALLEY CATStray - email Bob Longstreth, CJ's husband, in your area. Their open trailer is a very nice unit with a front nose shield to deflect any road trash coming up. I'm sure Bob can lead you in the right direction as to the manufactuer, pricing, and towing stats.
Stray CatAlley Cat,

Thanks.....

Do you know his email address or his user name on the board ? I could always email CJ...... but I don't know Bob's.

Marty UsherJohn- Bob's POA screen name is RPL, his email is boblongstreth@comcast.net

Also, try David Nazem in Dallas (davidn). He had a Texas Roll back trailer for sale a couple of weeks ago. It's a nice unit - easy, one person operation.

Al's ProwlerI think one of the best trailers made is the www.classicmfg.com/index2java.htm , the full steel deck is the best way to go in my opinion.

Al

Todd CameronFor the price of a new open trailer, you can buy a good enclosed unit. I'd personally search for one of those.
JRLThe man says he has a Caravan, it can't tow that much weight.
I believe a Caravan can't tow much more than 3000 lbs. or so
you would really be stretching it with a Prowler (around 2900 lbs)and the trailer(which should be 3-4 hundred lbs), at least
JRL
BuckaneerAn aluminum 20' trailer with tandem wheels weighs around 1200 lb. Too much for a grand caravan. You will have a bad case of the tail wagging the dog!

Gary C3,800 lb. maximum towing capacity (when properly equipped) I would pass, no trailer is light enough to tow both especially a Firebird.

Maybe you should try to swing a older truck to tow with and not wear out the Caravan.

Stray CatWow,

I'll have to do some research - maybe keep the old Cadillac for towing purposes. Or just drive the cars. Thanks for all the excellent advice.

John

Marty UsherJohn - do you EVER get enough time behind the wheel of your kat? Of course, everybody knows my philosophy on the subject - cars are meant to be driven! I just have too much fun driving the Prowler, especially on long distance trips, to consider trailering it.

If your thinking about it from the standpoint of your whole family being able to travel to events together, maybe a used SUV or quad cab pick up would work better than the the Caravan.

now that is a thought

plenty of room for all the kiddies and with enough brakes and motor to tow an enclosed trailer. These cars were what people used to haul smaller travel trailers when they were new. The only thing how is the mechanics of a 37 year old Caddy? I have thought about putting a hitch on my `74 Coupe deVille but do not know if I would be spending more time with the hood up than driving.

If you feel the cooling system, transmission and the brakes are 100% go for it.

But do not even think the caravan will pull the cat and a trailer.

DR PROWLERI have purchased an open trailer recently from a local manufacturer and was very impressed with the quality.I'm pulling it behind a Chevy Avalanche that seems to be holding it pretty good.My first real experience will be the trip to the Smokies in August 2003.
Stray CatMarty,

I agree - love driving the car but I am just worried that I am putting too many miles on it.

Larry,

Yep - I trust the Caddy 100%. I have put a lot of money into that car. I will try and post pictures tomorrow but suffice it to say that I built it for my disabled brother who is now 100% disabled. Can't even walk any longer so I now own the car. I just can not bring myself to sell it......

Stray CatHey Gary,

How are you - yep, those toll booth curbs do tend to get in the way.

Hope things are well. Have not figured out which events I am going to go to yet. Too busy at work. Have not logged on for a few weeks so I am trying to catch up. See you soon.

CJWe have a Classic open trailer with a shield on the front. It is an excellent trailer, we've had no problems. Used it to tow to Deadwood, Colorado and Cruisin' the Coast. Bob originally bought it to haul around his '69 Rumbler!! Both cars fit the trailer with no problem.

Bob also has a good friend who is a dealer for the Classic trailers.

It also did double duty at the Deadwood event as a rescue vehicle! LOL!

SuperKatWe have an open FeatherLite with the front wind screen weighs about 1100 - 1300 lbs. It is aluminum so it's very light. An aluminum open trailer may be your best bet. Check closely, it may still be too heavy.
Gordon
Stray CatThanks,

I will look into these. Price is one concern as well as ability to tow the vehicles. I don't have the $$$$ right now to pick up a trailer and a tow vehicle. Take care.

SIncerely,

Bob GoetzOK John glad to see you are thinking pulling a car trailer with a Caravan is not a good idea. Now heres an idea put a hitch on the firebird and use that to tow the Kat! Just kidding. Now I will take some heat for this next line but here it goes " Trailers are for Boats " I get this line thrown at me when I haul the Harleys in a trailer behind the van but they never say anything when I haul them with the Prowler!
Stray CatI agree with that and used to hate seeing trailers for cars. With the Firebird, I have a ton of $$$$$ in it so It kills me to see the road dings. Just trying to keep mileage down on the cars. Will more than likely have to drive them anyway.... not too bad a punishment.

I MIGHT put a hitch on the 66 convertible..... it will pull anything !

Bob GoetzJohn the caddy is a 66 convert! that would be way cool I have thought of putting a hitch on my 57 Chev wagon to pull the Harleys to sturgis but my painter would go nuts.
