| YellowFever | Awhile back I posted a question as to the merits (or not) of the hemi vs the V-10 and which would be better suited for a new truck. Overwhelmingly, people sided with the new hemi. Good! Now Dodge announces the NEW v-10 for the RAM. The ads I've seen tout the Hemi as a performance engine. Alright! Then what is the new V-10 going to be (trick question as I already know the answer). Will these both be taking sales away from the other one?
In other words, would people wanting to buy the new hemi NOW decide to wait for the new V-10 or will the new Hemi take potential sales from the V-10? Perhaps there will be a huge difference in price that will force two distinct markets.. Just curious. |
| BeWare | Here is what I think. The V10 will be a limited edition truck, MSRP will likely not only be higher, but the dealers will probably add on a hefty chunk for profit greed. The V10 will be regular cab only. The V10 with more HP and Torgue should have more haul/tow capacity, but I think the tires and suspension will detract from that. I think the V10 will be a Big Boy Toy truck only. If people want a practical truck , and/or a quad cab they will either go with the Hemi or the Diesel. I chose the Hemi quad cab because it is still practical and loads of fun too boot. |
| YellowFever | Thanks Rich. I had read somewhere that the V-10 was also going to be in a Quadcab version (hope.hope.hope) Anything is speculation till it's actually produced but, you are 100% right on the gouging aspect that will e comiong (at least for the first year or two) Thanks |
| RPL | The truck V-10 (iron block) and Cummins Turbo Diesel are available in the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks only. The new Hemi was launched in these trucks and rolled out to the 1/2 ton mid-year. This engine replaced the 5.8 V-8. The truck V-10 (cast iron) was a low cost alternative to the diesel. If you look at the spec's on the Hemi and the truck V-10, you can see that the Hemi could possibly replace the V-10 at some point in the future. The V-10 that was just announced is a limited production all-aluminum Viper engine. the 1/2 ton regular cab truck will have 22" wheels. It's designed for performance. It will be in short supply and expensive, approaching $50K. |
| YellowFever | RPL, I totally agree with the "old" V-10 and as you pointed out (and suspected) the price of one with the "new" V-10 will be noticably higher in cost then a similar truck with the Hemi. Which brings up another question. Ford has numerous truck styling packages on the same platform (F-150) like the Harley, the Heritage, the King Ranch, etc. Why doesn't Dodge do this (Dodge Harley or something). Can't wait to see what Ford will do with the Lightning to keep the highest hp title..... |

| BeWare | Butchee, the Hemi not only has more HP and Torgue than the 5.9 Liter V8 it replaced, it also gets 10% better gas mileage. Right now with mostly stop and go traffic a pretty heavy foot we are avergaing 12.2 mpg. The truck only has 2,200 miles so far and it keeps getting better. Initially we were only getting 11.7 mpg average. |

| BeWare | YF thanks for the links. Most are for the older model Ram. Liked the first one. I think I will see what DC will sell the V10 hood and for how much. They should be available sometime after the truck comes out. |
