Landscape Doctor | One more step in controlling everything we do. |
Randy Cobb | Every state is looking at this closely. I'm involved with a national trade association of petroleum and convenience store marketers and revenues are falling due to mileage efficiencies, rising cost of construction and aversion to tax increases. I'm not advocating it, just saying ALL states are attempting to find a better way to fund road construction and maintenance. Also are trying to find a way to capture funds from electric vehicles for their road use. |

2050... transportation vehicles will be issued according to need. Family size and location will be considered in assignment. All vehicles will be silver and no options will be given. You will be taxed on the usage of the vehicle ,failure to pay this tax will result in public transportation.
will too..wait and see, oh I forgot we won't be here. |
tangled up in BLUE | ...the idea seems so stupid, checking your odometer, government offices to verify your mileage etc etc...why not just raise the federal gas tax...accomplishes the same thing without all the paperwork, people who drive more pay more tax...seems simple to me...after all, it was the government who mandated higher mileage vehicles |

I absolutely agree with your thoughts on this one. Another benefit would be that the folks that drive the gas guzzlers would pay more in taxes than those that drive more economical vehicles which I think is only fair. One of the benefits to driving older vehicles is no ability for electronic tracking or disabling and the speedometer/odometer can be disconnected if need be....let them tax that! |
padroo | Road use tax, haven't truck drivers been paying that for years? Everyone uses the roads, it cost money to maintain them so who should pay to repair them and how do you make it fair? |
Landscape Doctor | When I first read the op's post I was a bit upset but the more I thought about it I changed my mind. Let's say the new tax would be 1.5 cents per mile and the tax on gas now is eliminated. If car A gets 20 miles per gallon at 1.5 cents per mile that's 30 cents per gallon, car B gets 30 miles per gallon at 1.5 cents per mile that's 45 cents per gallon. So the more efficient car pays more under the new tax, but that is actually fairer because they are actually causing the same ware and tare because the same miles are driven and the new tax is based on per mile driven. If a car is all electric they are paying no tax at all. I am not in favor of the government putting new taxes in place I think we pay enough especially the middle class, we get stuck with the burden of taxes. With all that said something does need to change because the current tax is not working and the roads and bridges need help. I think no matter what they do they will not please everyone. |

2050 would make me about 90 years old. You think I will still be able to drive my Prowler. |
JeraneW | Kind of high jacking the OP: however; don't laugh, I am 84 and don't plan on giving up my Prowler yet. quote: Originally posted by Landscape Doctor: 2050 would make me about 90 years old. You think I will still be able to drive my Prowler.

beachcat | what's a light poll? lol 1. I like the new style bulbs they are forcing down our throats? 2. I'm shocked at the price of the new bulbs? 3. They must be good for us because they know what's good for the environment. |
