Bama Kat | I went on the hot rod power tour wednesday, when I got close to Birmingham we was in heavy traffic and my kat started having a whistling noise when I would give it gas. sounded like a vaccum leak, when I got to the race course I turned the motor off then restarted about 5 mins later and the sound was gone and it sounded normal. I drove it home with no problems if it was a vaccum leak would it clear itself? Mike |
ALLEY CAT | Mike - was the top up? How fast was your speed when you heard the noise? Did you have your fan motor running with outside vent air coming into the cabin area? At higher speeds,,,,with the top up and fan motor going, with outside vented air coming in,,,,,,,my silver cat made a whistle noise. Traced it the the rubber seal in the trunk area that seals up to the underside of the trunk lid. By moving the rubber molding up to reach the trunk lid underside, I was able to stop that noise. About two years have gone by,,,,and its whistling again, but now I'm getting use to it. |
Bama Kat | I was in heavy traffic, stopped most of the time, top was up. it kept doing it all the way to the Birmingham race track where the power tour was even after getting out of traffic and at speed. then when I cut the engine off & went back a few mins later and started the sound was gone. guess I will wait till it happens again, if I take it in for service they will never find it |

You need to let them drive it for several days. Let multiple mechanics take it out for a day or weekend of driving. They will find the noise!

TLRandall | Could it have been you alternator whistling? I have noticed that several of us are having problems with that, and I don't remember who's Kat it was at one of our parades had an alternator that was making a lot of noise during the parade, but it cleared up afterward. It sounded like air or vacuum at first, but it was definitely the alternator, I guess due to the high heat, AC being on, and the slow parade route. |
Bama Kat | TL that could be it, had been driving several hours and it just started after we had sit in traffic 30 mins Kevina is that what you do? |
toys | Mike you might also want to check the alternator belt adjusting pulley?????, i recently had to install a new one for a friend of mine who had the same problem. Just food for thought before you buy an alternator. toys |
prowlrman | This also sounds like the Radio whine that I have expereinced from time to time....still have not discovered the source...but acts the same way... |
Bama Kat | prowlrman, I thought about the radio while it was happening and turned it off. Alternator or belt sounds like the problem since it quit when the engine cooled a few mins.thanks all Mike |
Jim C | Mike, Mine makes that same whistling noise too, it seams like it's coming from underneath in the rear. on short trips I don't here the noise. any body out there this may sound like a dumb question but does the tranny cooler have a fan? |
ed monahan | Jim, yes it does. |
Bama Kat | noise came back so I took the Kat into the dealer today, they called and said that the alternator was picking up the radio or vice versa. they had a call into DC to see what to do about it Mike |
Marty Usher | There are a couple of green resister wires that are supposed to help prevent that from happening. |
Bama Kat | they are putting in a new radio Mike |
