CJHave been working on a database to inventory all the Car Magazines I have that feature the Prowler since 1993. I have over 100.

Came across this article in the October, 1997 issue of Chrysler Car Enthusiast Magazine:

The good news is that the 2,862 pound 1997 Plymouth Prowler has finally arrived with an announced price of $39,000, including the destination charge. With only 2,000 Prowlers to be built this year, not every Plymouth dealer will get one. That's about 1,000 short of previous first year estimates.

The bad news is that there won't be any 1998 models to sell. But that's not all bad! Why? Because Chrysler doesn't want to re-certify the current 3.5-liter V6 that produces 215 hp (230 hp in Prowler trim) for '98. Plymouth will instead wait for the new 3.5-liter V6 (DT/Issue #142) that will produce 250 horsepower in LH form. Look for the horsepower to increase to around 275. That should be enough to satisfy any V8 aficionado considering a Prowler. Also look for Neon Tennis Ball Green to be the standard color on the '99 Prowler and Prowler Purple to be optional.

idiveInteresting. If its true this belongs in the facts and stats.
Outside of the hp, and standard green and optional purple for 99, for being written in October 97, their production number estimates are way off. As of late August 97 they had only built 156 Prowlers. Certainly by October they should have been able to tell they weren't going to meet the 2000 number.

Ed... you came this close to getting your green Prowler!

ed monahanMickey, they are killing me. I wanted Deep Green Metallic but I guess dayglo green would have sufficed. lol
WildCatI was told by an engineer from the Mack Road plant in 95 or 96 that production was to start in Jan 97. Production for sale to the public wasn't until July 97, so that might explain the small number produced.

mine was built in June of 98, since there are no 98's does that mean I don't own a Prowler ................ LOL

Interesting..

One of our former local owners once met a lady who worked at the Chrysler Whitman Arizona Proving Grounds, who said there was a 'green' Prowler being used for testing at the Proving Grounds test track. She also said that after testing there, that Prowler was sent to a Texas Chrysler proving grounds for further testing. We could never confirm her story with anyone else from Chrysler,,,,but we couldn't figure out why she would make up that story, as she had no reason to lie about it. I asked Jerry Scholten about it, but he had a blank look on his face, and didn't confirm or deny the story. Maybe CJ or Bob can find out for sure?

lionbergerI was one of the four supervisors who launched the 3.5 engine assembly line at the Trenton Engine plant in Trenton Michigan. CJ has it exactly right. We were trying to get the aluminum block machining line going but had a lot of "growing pains." We actually worked a lot of overtime to get a bank of 3.5 engines so as not to disrupt the supply in 1998; however, the Prowler engine took a backseat since, at the time, each engine was walked down the line and basically hand built. This caused a lot of stoppages we could not afford.

The first year of the aluminum block was kind of rocky. There were a lot of machining and assembly problems. Since I moved to 2.0 head machining in 1998 I avoided much of these.

bjprowlerI think a "snakeskin green" Prowler would look great...

I agree,,,,,,,,,and I don't even like green cars!

WINDY CITY PROWLERI love that green that would have been my choice instead of orange. Too late now but it would have been nice if only purple was made in 97, yellow in 99 only and some other cool colors.
xtreme prowlerAn owner sent me this picture a few years back after he had it painted... beautiful color...

DHansenI'm not a big fan of green either. But, after seeing a snakeskin green Viper out in the sun at Barrett Jackson I'm hooked on that color.

spoonsI love the green...wish they made it
STEVE ITALIAI've seen a lamborghini Gallardo here in Italy few days ago....we call this color VERDE NUCLARE....NUCLEAR GREEN...like atomic and radioactive. I love this color!!!! Fit very well the prowler! I think that with some particular like the grille or the rims painted in matt black look much better aggressive!
HowardHere is the only 1998 Prowler made.
