metschersHello,
I'm due for the dreaded timing belt replacement only because of time.
(1999 13k miles)
So after all the discussions/posts about timing belt replacements,
what manufacture....brand....source is everyone going with?
There's been lots of great advice and opinions, but I'm still not real clear on where I should purchase a timing belt kit...oem .....local parts store...Amazon.
Where's everyone buying theirs?
Any "purchase" advice would be great.

Thanks

DON WIEBERI did mine at the dealer. all belts at the same time. also water pump.
phil2237JMO.....I would get the kit from the dealer, a bit more money , but they seem to hold up longer. There are tons of suppliers to pick from, But I have had good luck with dealer items for timing belt or water pumps. Regular belts or gaskets & hoses that can be changed out in a short time, I use a top brand from a auto parts shop. But anything that requires hours to replace and are internal, I stick with the dealer...JMO.....
kriegsadmiralI have my timing belt, water pump and tensioners on order at dealer and will get installed when they arrive
TucsonJerThe Chrysler dealer did mine too, Ed. Jer
padrooI got mine from Advance Auto and was made by Dayco.

Caution on Gates Timing Belt Kits. This was on a Subaru, but maybe common on other Gates Kits. Buyer Beware.

drbuttonChrysler dealer
mslc10This came out :

This went in:

Dealer for belt, pulley, water pump, and oring. Dealer gave me wrong tensioner , returned it ( $170) and re used old one.
All was in good shape at 66k . Was factory belt a gates? I dunno. Previous owner put 45k on it ,he did not do the belt . Did someone do the belt change at 11k ? Probably not. Mechanics said no signs of being opened up before.

padrooCar dealers don't always use OEM parts because I have seen the local parts stress deliver parts to them.

drbuttonDealers are SUPPOSED to inform customers when they do not use OEM parts, but I agree with Padroo, they will use aftermarket parts on the sly. I've had it happen to me and had cheap aftermarket parts fail! Reputable dealers should inform you. Red Flag if they don't.

Many, if not most CUSTOMERS want their cars fixed ASAP, so if the dealer doesn't have a part in stock they will buy it local to keep the customer happy. OEM parts are 'required' for warranty work, where the factory is paying the dealer for parts and labor.
How does everyone like the OEM Prowler ball joints?

CAT-A-TONICWith all due respect regarding the ball joints. It's not the quality of the BJ's that's causing the failures.
Marty Usherwhen I had my Prowler, I just changed the timing belt every time I changed engines! :D Had the original then a new one for the 3.8 stroker motor, then another with the 4.0 Stroker, and agoan for the final time with the 4.3 Stroker....put 57K miles on that last one.
