treybI was just reading through the 2001 Woodward Technical info section and saw this question!!

"Urking noise at idle, in gear with brakes on- No good indication of cause without listening to the car making the noise."

Does anyone lese ever have this problem? Ever since I got my 99 Red once in a while I hear a Urking noise only when stopped and idling. Normally it when im on the break and in gear!! It's weird. Nothing to bad but you hear that sound and it goes away. I got the same feedback from the shop that they need to hear it. But it doesn't happen all the time!!

I thought it was not using Premium gas at first but I still get it from time to time. If your banging the radio you will never hear it!! Any advice, idea or similar things? Anyone get it fixed? What was it???

Trey

JRLWhat is an "urking" sound sound like-be more specific.
treybHard to explain! It sounds like a urrrk or a grind of some sort. A rubbing! Not like metal! Chrunning!! You could be sitting at a light or stop sign. Everyone is staring at you! Then just this intermitted sound from like the front right side you hear. Then it goes away!! Again its only at idle! Normally I have my foot on the break maybe in neutral! Car it not moving so its not like just from the breaks. Happens once in a while ever since I got it!! It was funny to see someone else posted the same thing before!!
Mike KrehelSome of the 99's were plagued by problems with alternator pully/bearing problems. DC switched to a different alternator manufacturer and the problem seemed to go away. A TSB was never issued for this problem. The old part number is 4609093 and the newer replacement is 4609300AC.

Mike KrehelThe urgh noise that is discribed is very hard to diagnose but here is some more up to date info on the alternator:

The alternator did not change supplier or design. The alternator pulley was changed to a decoupler design for the 2000 model year to eliminate a drive belt (poly V belt) rattle noise that appeared as the belt tension decayed (lessened) and was most evident when the engine was cold. The rattle noise is heard at low rpms (850 to 1200) as rpms are increased, whether normal movement or brake torquing. One way to tell if it is the belt, is to retension the drive belt according to the service manual Cooling Specification section for an old belt(150 lbs) vs a new belt(190 lbs).

cmblockhusI also have the same sound from time to time in my 99, the same type sound comes from the abs pump on anti lock cars with a bad canister
But we have no abs so Ive been stumped trying to find this noise Ive been in the auto business for the last 37 years and feel like i have some idea what im talking about but may not be an expert.
The noise is from the right front had an idea at one time that maybe the right calipear was backing off and letting the pad not hold as much pressure on that rotor but later that idea was washed out so am stumped again but glad to hear that im not alone

prwlynI have 7 owners down in my area with the same noise and I therefore did a lot of research on the problem with Chrysler. Mike hit it on the head with the altenator being the problem. The 1999 models had, in the beginning of the year, a Nippondenso altenator and about April or May of 99 they switched in production to a Mitsubishi with the decoupler design pulley. I talked to customer service and even had a VP with Chrysler assist to get some sort of fix. CS contacted a Prowler engineer and he said that a small amount of noise was acceptable and that they would not do anything about the problem. I since priced the Mitsubishi altenator and it is about $384.00 for the replacement one. I now have one owner that did replace his and the noise is gone. I have 38,000 miles on the Kat and the noise gets worse over time but then stays the same after awhile. It is only when cold for me, once it warms up it goes away. To test this problem, open the hood and get someone to start the car, put it in drive and power brake it at 1250 RPM and then use a stethescope, mispelled. Please it on the altenator and, on mine, it will blow your ear off with the noise.

By the way, it was the Prowler mechanic up at Latham Motors, DC's largest Prowler dealer, that found the problem and the cure. It actually was a problem on the 300m since it had the same engine and components.

SasyMamaHi Fred
?
What headlight bulbs do you have in your KAT. HID?

Sassy

treybThanks for all of the info, Sounds right. So what do we do just deal with it or have to spend $384.00 out of pocket?
Will the warranty cover anything? Does changing the belts or resetting the tension really help? I'm going to bring all of this info to the dealer but I have a feeling that they won't be able to cover it since its not listed in DC anywhere. Fred for those guys that did not change the alternator did it get worst or do you just deal with it??
Thanks for all of the help. At least I know that I'm not crazy. They should cover this if it is truly a problem. Especailly if so many people are having the same problems. So DC said they would do nothing for it??

Do you know the tech's name out in Latham Motors. Maybe I could contact him or have the shop talk to him so I can get it worked out!

ChromerUrrrk..Urgh..Chirp..Rub..Squeak?? Describing intermitinet car noises with words seems kind of like a blind mouse trying to describe an elephant don't you think?

Anyway..I'm going to go ahead slap my buzzer and ring in on this one! I had a noise coming from the same location at idle in or out of gear with my November '99 car.

Invoice 28752 dated November 19th 2001:

"CUSTOMER STATES THERE IS A NOISE UNDER THE HOOD. TECH STATES THAT THE BELT MAY NEED REPLACED. CAUSE: ALT BELT NOISEY. REPLACE BELT-ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT 4573013AB (NC)."

The new belt DID cure my Urrk..Urgh..Rub..Squeak..whatever?

Hope this helps..

prwlynSassy, they are the Zenon Plasma bulbs, 65 watt. Got them for $28.00 a set off the web. They light up white with the blue tint to them. They really make a difference at night and a lot lower cist than the HID.

Trey, I don't have the name of the tech at Latham that I talked too. I was pointed there by one of the DC folks and they suggested I talk to the shop foreman which I did. He then put the tech on the phone. He said he ad the problem on the 300M and when they changed the altenator to the Mitsubishi the problem was resolved and that they were doing the same thing on any Prowler complaints there.

Chromer, the noise I hear is best described as if a fiberglass panel was rubbing or tapping on the frame, it is a vibrating type noise. Thats the best I can do to describe it. I also had the belt adjusted and then replaced but the noise comes back as soon as the belt loosens up again. It appears that the problem still is in the pulley and not the belt. When they tightened my belt the noise was even worse. According to the book there are two seperate adjustments, one for a new belt and one for adjusting the old belt. They told me to be sure the tech doing this was aware of that. This problem I'm talking about would be mostly in cars built before April or May of 1999. It was then that they made the change in production according to the DC source who looked it up for me.

Warranty would cover it "IF" you can get the dealer to find where the problem is documented but there is no TSB or anything on it from DC. anothe rone of my owners here has brought the car into the dealer and told themm he will not take it back until it is fixed. His is now so loud all the time, he says it is embarrassing to drive it anymore.

Not bad to change. About a hour or so. Did not keep track of time it took with all the life distractions inbetween install.LOL.

Basically what Robin said. I did not remove radiator support,,, prob should have. I snuck the altinator out the side.
