cmblockhusAnyone in Dallas see whats going on there? Looks bad on TV

curtis

YellowFeverWhat he is refering to is footage of the space shuttle Columbia breaking up upon reentry over Dallas right now.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and their families.

RayOh MY God ... that is awful, I am so glad I logged on here a I would not have known ... that is awful! Let's all say a prayer for thoe on board the shuttle.
ALLEY CATThanks Curtis,,,I wouldn't have known either if I hadn't read your post. Doesn't look good,,,,our prayers are needed.
Gary CI learned about 911 here and then this, how horrific, our thoughts and prayers go out to them and their families.
CJHave been following it on t.v. How horrible for them and their families. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of them. They are also saying that a lot of poisonous debris has fallen in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and are alerting people to NOT get near the debris. They are saying that it has a highly toxic gas connected with it and if you breathe it, it will form a sac around the lungs and will suffocate within 48 hours. There is not much they can do in the way of treatment.

CJ: While there may be truth to that and all ... my hunch is that they don't want treasure hunters rushing in to claim parts of the shuttle and later offer them up on Ebay when they will be needed for the investigation. Our goverment is GREAT at disinformation ... if only they could handle things with the truth, politics would be changed forever!

Tom SantellaThe only thing that is acceptable right now are prayers.

You are correct Ray. As someone that lives within 2-3 miles of NASA in Clear Lake, most of our friends work their and know these astronauts. The mood is total shock down here.

It's sad that in a tragedy like this there would be souvenir hunters but, alas, there are.

CJ, anything toxic (if there were) on the debris would have been vaporized going Mach 6 (12,500 mph) at an altitude where every molecule hitting the shuttle is like a bullet and super heats the underside to over 3000 degrees.

I know of no chemical substance that could stand that and still remain intact on molten metal debris falling from the sky.

NASA wants and needs every pice that they can find but, alot of it (the smaller stuff) will not be found.

The debris field has been extended from Dallas all the way down to Galveston county (where I live) about 200 miles difference. Quite a field.

TFischerI was doing stuff around the house and hadn't turned on the TV until I got a call from Ken's sister wanting to know if we were okay here. We all went outside and watched the contrails and it breaking up. There was an apartment complex in Plano (just north of Dallas) that had debris that hit the building, several other places just south of Dallas had large pieces of debris in fields, on the streets, etc.
Todd CameronA very sad day... There is risk in any kind of travel... I just hope that the gov does not try to pin this on "terrorists" or worse, actually find that this is the case. My heart goes out to their family's and all the others will are going to adversely effected by this disaster.
ed monahanOn one of the networks, an astronomer said they were watching it come over the Cal./Nev border and saw pieces coming off. He figured it was tiles. The commentator then pointed out that if one tile came off, it would start a chain reaction. The lack of tiles would create heat, but more importantly much more drag which could actually cause the shuttle to lose a wing, or at the very least cause it to roll to that side and that would be fatal.
That is very preliminary but that is what they reported.
Randy CobbWe now know the horrific truth and many of the details.

I can't put into words a worthy response other than to pray for the families, friends and those at NASA.
