BeWareI think Rick beefed up the rear suspension on his SSR
dj4hireThanks for the help, I bought a 2005 Silver SSR and want to tow my prowler. Can't find much about the hitches online but I knew you guys would come through.
01ProwlerI talked to Rick about this at the Dells event. I don't remember him saying anything about beefing up the rear suspension, but I could be wrong. I do know that he had a different hitch installed that was mounted behind his license plate. The factory hitch won't cut it.
ZackCongrats on your new truck I can't wait to see it. I know you've been shopping for a while...glad you found the right deal. Silver is a sharp color for the SS....and the prowler. It will look great towing your Candy!
whealy Previous SSr towing thread with pics.

Keep in mind the towing capicity is only 2500 pounds. perhapse that's why you are hainvg issues finding a hitch.

Richard JacksonEverything you need to know is on the SSR site. A lot has been discussed about towing etc.

wallygator310Towing capacity is limited I understand not because of the chassis, etc. but because of the small size of the radiator and cooling capacity of it and the tranny, mostly the tranny. You would have to change the hitch for a larger class also.

Wally

ECurtisDon't do it. The Prowler and trailer will exceed the maximum towing capacity of the SSR. The SSR's towing capacity is limited by the vehicles ability to cool itself. Most SSR's have cooling issues. This is an active topic on the www.ssrfanatic.com site.

Also exceeding a vehicles towing capacity can be really dangerous when trying to stop you vehicle on a downward run.

Please be safe. Be around to enjoy your Prowler and your SSR.

I'm the Rick from Missouri who towed my Prowler with my SSR to the Texas Stampede last year. I also towed it to the Toronto event last year and to Detroit Dreamcruise in August without any problems whatsoever.

I made my own 2" hitch and fabricated it to the rear cross member of the frame. It wasn't so difficult to do. I removed the rear bumper and cross member to weld it in. I accessed the hitch through the bumper under the swing out license plate. I did change the springs just to lower the truck for looks, not for towing purposes. I think the 2500 lb rating was on the existing hitch and not cooling or tranny because the tranny is the same as in the Tahoe or Trailblazer which is rated for towing more. I've been told that the tire rating may be the reason for the 2500 limit, but have had no problems.

This is the first I've seen the post that Whealy forwarded and I agree with Bob Goetz, but I didn't install the airbags. The existing wiring doesn't include an electric brake controller wire. Had to add it.

Towing the Prowler on the Texas Rollback trailer weighs about 4100-4200 lbs. It tows great and I still get about 11-12 mpg. There again, I have no cooling problems at all, even running the air conditioner the temperature has never run above normal. This hasn't been an issue on my SSR towing or not.

Good luck and if you want any more information get in touch with me.
