KenGI have a '99 that has the smooth clear coated A-arms. After 3 years and 26,000 miles they have a lot of "dings" in the finish. Does anyone know of a way re-coat or polish out the dings in the clear coat??????

where have you been driving at...I have 17,000 miles and they look as good as the day I brought it home.....

Take them off and send out to be polished....hehehe

If deal to get replacement bushing ever happens then have them chromed.

WPGI am in the process right now of purchasing a used set of clearcoated front A-arms. When I get them in, I will check them out and see what condition they are in. If they are perfect and you are interested. I would be willing to exchange them for yours. Since I am having them polished anyway, the clearcoat is going to be removed.

Also, for anyone interested, I hope to have an exchange program soon, in which owners can send me their front A-arms in exchange for polished ones. I will post once I have definitive plans and prices set.

MattGDigging up a lot of old threads, but You can see that I'm at least searching the archives before asking a bunch of Qs that have already been covered 100 times...

Anyway, what is the finish that is on my '99's A arms? Is it silver paint with clear coat over that or just clear coat right on the Al(?) alloy?

Anyway mine have some kind of weird white residue on them which I can't figure out how to get off. Tried washing, polishing/rubbing compound, solvent, fine scotch brite pads, etc. I can't really tell but it looks like something on the finish... not pits/nicks in the finish...

The rest of the car is nearly perfect and it has ~10k miles on it so it's not like it's been rode hard and put up wet :-) Let me see if I can figure out how to post a pic:

ALLEY CATThe early production Prowlers used A-arms made by a company that went under financially,,and a new supplier was then used. Don't know what has caused the flaws on the finish, but you are not alone with that issue.
GaryEKen, I would not consider re-coating your a-arms as a option. The cost should be about the same as chroming. It sounds like your Prowler has had some good highway miles. You do not need to worry about the ball joints or bushings when chroming the a-arms. I have had a exchange program for the front suspension parts for over 15 years and have gained a lot of information over time. The change of a-arm and knuckle manufactures during the mid 99 production resulted in 3 changes. First, the early 99 a-arms are light grey, smooth and clear coated while post mid year 99 a-arms are silver and have a bumpy surface. Second, the material of the a-arms and knuckles differ, with the post mid year parts having both silicon and magnesium, making it very difficult to chrome them. Third, there are some minor design changes. The upper a-arms are the same while the post mid year production lower a-arms have more material inside of the "V" and the knuckles have a slightly different inside face appearance. The a-arms and knuckles are all interchangeable but I do not allow this for my part exchanges. My exchange parts are show quality triple plated chrome. I prefer chroming because of appearance, longevity and durability.

KenGWow, It looks like MattG has dug up a post of mine from back in 2002. I had my whole front suspension chromed by GaryE shortly after that post. Now, 15 years later it looks as good as the day Gary did the work. I would highly recommend to MattG to send your parts to Gary. You won't regret it every time you look at the car.

MattGTo tell you the truth I was not planning on having my front suspension parts chromed. My thinking is twofold:

1) I bought the car as an investment. I got pretty tired of having money sit in securities and not appreciate much and me personally not get anything out of it . I know the likelihood of the Prowler actually being a good investment is slim at Best. OTOH I want to be a little careful about how much money I throw at the car.

2) I want to keep the car as original as possible however I do intend to add bolt on appearance and performance items that can easily be removed by a future owner. OK, I might be willing to make an exception for the chrome front and parts however, still The $3K is a little hard to swallow.

At this point my intention is to go with the A-arm covers. I do wish they were chrome rather then stainless steal though. Related, the only place I have found them is at TPS and some sporadic stuff on ebay.

The actual reason for my post was I was just trying to figure out how to get the white stuff off of my A-arms and I thought someone might know what it is.

Michael PondHas anyone ever tried Spectra Chrome? Cost, ect.
Larry LordIt's very easy to just repaint the control arms.
The white spots were caused by water getting under the clear coat which caused the clear coat to lift.This was probably caused but small pits from road rash.
Just sand and repaint. Other than the R&R to do it, it's a simple job.
