embe | During our Smokies Cruise I had a close look at Richard's Borla exhaust system with the carbon fiber tips. Since they don't sell them anymore I thought I try to make my own. So I bought a couple of real carbon fiber mufflers on ebay for $10 a piece (careful with the shipping costs on those things, shipping was $60 for both?!?! ) and had a local muffler shop fabricate a straight through all stainless system from the cats back. The mufflers quality was surprisingly good: Awesome weld seams, polished stainless steel and true carbon fiber shell riveted to the steel, making the whole thing very light in weight.
It sounds great: Very deep sound and quiet when idling or cruising and pretty loud and screaming at WOT. And if one really wants to make a point you can take the silencers out!! Although the mufflers' diameter is bigger than the stock diameter they to not protrude any deeper towards the center of the vehicle or any higher than the stock ones. That makes their center to be further apart than the stock ones but leaves room for a rear valance which I might get soon. Total: $390. Let me know what you think. (BTW: it rained on the way to the shop, therefor the mess on the car...) |
halicat | Those are real nice ... love the look..... a little black paint on the inside of the tips may be an idea.... as good, or better than my factory Carbon fiber tips.. a job well done ... |
garysss | Looks great love to hear how it sounds. |
halicat | lightened that pict up for ya...
|
pumpkin | Good idea on the black paint. Would you believe I just painted the inside of one of my pipes on my PT today. Looks great,,gives it an exhaust look. |
embe | Halicat, thanks for lightning up the picture. Based on my experiences with the stock tips (I removed the stock inserts) I'll wait a while and see if they turn black by themselves with the help of the exhaust. I am afraid the silencers will not be removable anymore if I paint them, they fit very snuggly. |
ed monahan | My biggest concern is that there is someone trying to emulate Richard. It's the end of the world, I tell ya...the end. lol Looks good but a picture from the side/above in natural light would be a better view so we can truly appreciate it.

Ed, I'm not emulating Richard, I am perfecting him! Here's the pictures, just for you!:

ed monahan | Michael, the last picture is the one I was looking for. Looks great. I am also thankful you are not emulating Richard, I was worried about you. lol Did Jessica have the baby yet? If so, where are the pics? Merry Christmas. By the way, are you from Wisconsic, like Dusti? |
Richard Jackson | Embe, very nice setup and I need the info so I can emulate your tach that you showed me in the Dells. Richard PS Hey, how come there is no snow in this picture? lol This message has been edited by Richard Jackson on 12-15-2005 at 07:58 PM |
ed monahan | I am glad he finally washed the car. lol His wife Jesse was due today. They are expecting a boy. Merry Christmas to Michael, Jessica and the soon to be Jr. |

Black Tie 161 | Those ams some bigguns! So you're saying you could get those for 5 cents on ebay but shipping is $70? : |

Yep. But I had shipping costs of $36 each combined for the two mufflers. So it totalled out at $70 and I saved a total of $2 by doing so!! |

embe... To me, the cans just seem a little too big for the car and the actual exhaust diameter inside the tips seem too small? I always admire folks who try something a little different Prowl on.. |

Good point, but I think it's an optical illusion, the new one is bigger: The stock inner pipes are 1-3/4" surrounded by the 3-5/8 outer pipe. The new ones measure 2" inner pipe diameter and 4-1/4" outer pipe diameter (the muffler body is 5"). I think the car reacts quicker now to throttle hits. It might be my imagination, it's hard to catch in numbers. But since I also changed the air intake to a K&N cold air intake the combination of intake and exhaust might have made a difference one can tell. Maybe the cat has 255HP now?? |
