ALLEY CAT | What a bunch of crap,,,,buying into the race after he couldn't run fast enough to qualify Why NAPA stays with this loser,,,,I'll never know. Waltrip buys Cope entry into Coca-Cola 600 Concord, NC (Sports Network) Although Michael Waltrip failed to qualify for Nextel Cup's Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday, he will drive in the race after purchasing the ride of Derrike Cope. Cope qualified 43rd in the No.74 Dodge, but will give way to Waltrip who will bring sponsor NAPA and his No.55 with him. Only the top-35 in owner points automatically qualify for a race and Waltrip's team being 36th in the standings, was forced to race his way in. His best lap was a time of 30.018 seconds which was just 47th best in the qualifying field of 53 drivers. Waltrip will now be able to extend his current consecutive races streak to 262.

halicat | besides being a goof.. Mikey just can't get it together... your right AC ... this is a joke.. Nascar should be ashamed to let it happen.. |
392HEMI | It shouldn't be allowed but here is what I understand. Cope has finished almost last , when he has qualified, sold his ride to Waltrip who will get the driver points but #74 gets the car points and probably make more money than if Cope had raced. Waltrip must drive the Dodge Intrepid that Cope used to qualify. Seems mostly economic for Cope and the car points. |
halicat | The part that worries me is that if one can do it, then so can others..... imagine 4 or 5 drivers doing this for one race....It sure doesn't say much for the idea of "competitive spirit"...Thats why I don't like Mikey's team plan... and wouldn't Derrick's crew be a little miffed....?? big $$ winning out just doesn't seem like a good message... right or wrong ? |
ALLEY CAT | You are absolutely right Halicat,,,,it's a disgrace to racing, IMO. |
WildCat | I think they should ALL have to qualify no matter what points this year, last year or 1949. This is no longer stock car racing...........THEY NEED TO GO BACK TO HAVING TO BUILD THE CARS AND SELL ON THE STREET TO BE ABLE TO CALL IT NASCAR RACING.........it is a body with different style decals to look like the car they claim it is The best part about todays race is a Dodge decal made it to the winners circle |
SuperKat | Buying a spot is not new. Rousch did it and Gibbs did this a couple years ago to get the FedEx car into the race. Some teams have swapped paint schemes to meet sponser commitments. It's all about the sponser not Mikey. Who cares really if Derrick Cope is ok with it. |
ALLEY CAT | Gordon - with all due respect,,why would the multi-car teams of Rousch and Gibbs Racing buy another team's car and spot? I guess I don't remember those situations happening but I imagine they did? I can understand 'them' changing their sponsorship decals and paint scheme on one of their own stable of cars,,,when the one which doesn't qualify for the race,, is the company which is sponsoring the 'race' itself. That scenario makes logical sense,,,but not buying another team's car which qualified via another driver and crew. JMO |
dbudner | Give it a few years and these guys will be buying in from toyota. Then nascar will hit the level of suck that the nba has and lose more than a few viewers... |
ALLEY CAT | Ahhhhh,,,,,welcome to World Cup Soccer |
